Kiernan Up For Punter Of The Week Honors
November 30, 2020 | Football
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Carolina sophomore punter Ben Kiernan has been named a Ray's 4 Player of the Week as announced Monday by the Augusta Sports Council and the Ray Guy Award.
Kiernan, from Dublin, Ireland, averaged a career-high 50.6 yards over seven punts against No. 2 Notre Dame last Friday. He placed five of seven punts inside the 20-yard line. Additionally, three punts went for more than 50 yards, including a season-long 62 yarder.
Kiernan's five punts inside the 20-yard line were the most by a Tar Heel punter since David Wooldridge had six against Georgia Tech on Sept. 10, 2005.
The four punters are eligible to be named the Punter of the Week for week thirteen games. The announcement is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 10 a.m. ET.

About the Ray Guy Award
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thompson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
