November 11, 2020 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina head women's golf coach Jan Mann announced addition of Stephany Kim to the Carolina golf team with the signing of a National Letter of Intent Wednesday.
"We are excited that Stephany Kim will be joining our Carolina family as she is a proven leader, a great student and an accomplished golfer," Mann said. "Her golf experience and success as a junior will add to the depth of our team. The moment Stephany stepped on our campus, it was apparent that she would be a great addition. We look forward to all that Stephany will bring as a Carolina Tar Heel!"
A member of the Dominican Republic National golf team since 2013, Kim is the current Dominican Olympic Committee Golf Athelte of the Year and a five-time ACDS (Asociación de Cronistas Deportivos de Santiago) Female Golf Athlete of the Year. Kim won the AJGA Dominican Junior Open in May 2019 and the PRGA Junior Island Championship in April 2019. The Santiago, Dominican Republic native earned runner-up finishes at both the AJGA-UHY/Celadon Junior Championship and the 63rd Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship in 2019. In 2018, Kim won the US Kids Caribbean Championship at Puntacana with bogey-free rounds of 66 and 67.
"UNC has an incredible balance of stellar academics and athletics," Kim said. "I love the coaches and the beautiful campus! North Carolina holds a special place in my heart because it is where I started to compete internationally. Therefore, I am so grateful to be able to continue my golf career at Carolina. I love Carolina Blue!"
At Santiago Christian School, Kim is a four-time Director's Award for Academic Excellence winner and recently won the servant leader award in May 2020. Kim also earned the honor award as a freshman and sophomore. Currently, Kim is the vice president of National Honor Society and the president of the Eco-School for the second consecutive year. She also served as the vice president and treasurer of student council and the vice president of the Santiago outreach program.
Born Oct. 18 in Seoul, South Korea, Kim is the daughter of Thomas Kim and Wendy Kang and has an older brother, Tony. Kim plans to major in business administration at Carolina.
