December 22, 2020 | Football
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The North Carolina football program has placed 13 Tar Heels on All-ACC teams, the league office announced on Tuesday. WR Dyami Brown, RB Michael Carter and LB Chazz Surratt claimed first-team honors, while QB Sam Howell and RB Javonte Williams landed on the second team. OG Joshua Ezeudu and Carter for all-purpose are third-team honorees, and C Brian Anderson, LB Tomon Fox, OG Marcus McKethan, S Trey Morrison, WR Dazz Newsome, OT Jordan Tucker and DL Ray Vohasek were named honorable mention. The 13 honorees are the most for the Tar Heels since 2015.Â
Brown, the only wide receiver in UNC history with two 1,000-yard seasons, led the ACC and ranked sixth nationally with 1,099 receiving yards. His eight touchdowns in his junior campaign were second most in the league.
Carter once again displayed his versatility to earn plaudits as both a running back and an all-purpose player. He became just the eighth Tar Heel running back to post multiple 1,000-yard seasons with his conference-leading 1,245 rushing yards as a senior. Carter scored 11 total touchdowns and averaged 151.6 all-purpose yards per game, the second best mark in the ACC. His 7.98 yards per carry in 2020 broke Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice's mark of 7.2 that was set in Justice's freshman season of 1946.
Surratt repeats as a first-team linebacker after leading Carolina's defense with 91 tackles, tied for the team lead with six sacks and was second with 7.5 TFL. He also had six hurries, three pass breakups, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Surratt's 91 tackles were fifth most in the conference, while the six sacks tied for 10th.
Howell backed up his record-setting rookie campaign with an outstanding sophomore season. He completed 219 passes on 317 attempts (69.1%) for 3,352 yards and 27 TDs with only six INTs. His 3,352 passing yards leads the ACC and ranks fourth nationally, while the 27 touchdowns is tied for sixth in the country and second most in the ACC.
Williams was the other half of UNC's dynamic backfield duo alongside Carter. Williams set a program record with 22 touchdowns and rushed for 1,140 yards in his junior season. He ranks second in the nation in total TDs and his 103.6 rushing yards per game is third in the conference.
Anderson, Ezeudu, McKethan and Tucker all helped anchor an offensive line that was vital to Carolina setting a new program standard by averaging 556.6 yards of total offense per game, and scoring 43.0 points per game. The Tar Heels' 6,123 total yards leads all of college football, while the 43.0 ppg is the third highest average among Power 5 programs, trailing only Alabama and Clemson.
Fox led the UNC defense with 9.5 TFL and tied for the team lead with six sacks. He made 31 tackles, had six hurries, blocked a kick and forced a fumble in his final season in Chapel Hill.
Morrison, who saw time at both safety and nickel, came up with 32 tackles, three breakups, one TFL, one hurry and one interception.
Newsome hauled in 48 catches for 616 yards and five touchdowns in his senior campaign. He ranked 10th in the ACC in receptions and touchdowns in 2020. Newsome leads all active ACC players with 182 career receptions, the third most in program history.
Vohasek was pivotal in the trenches for Carolina. He finished with 28 tackles, 6.0 TFL, 3.5 sacks, four hurries and a breakup.Â
