TAR HEELS AND CATAMOUNTS
• Carolina and Western Carolina have met twice previously on the football field, both occuring recently in the 2017 and 2018 campaigns.
• In the first of a two-game series between the two programs, Carolina scored a 65-10 win at Kenan Stadium in 2017. Nathan Elliott threw for four touchdowns in the victory, and eight different Tar Heels found the end zone on the day.
• The 2018 game saw Elliott pass for 308 yards and two touchdowns to help UNC beat Western Carolina 49-26 in Chapel Hill. Javonte Williams scored three touchdowns.
STATE CHAMPS
• Having already defeated ACC in-state rivals Duke, NC State and Wake Forest in the same season for the first time since 2015, the Tar Heels will look to make it a perfect 4-0 against Old North State foes on Saturday against the Catamounts.
LAST TIME OUT
• Ian Book kept No. 2 Notre Dame's offense moving while the Fighting Irish defense locked down Sam Howell and No. 25 North Carolina's potent offense for the final three quarters of a 31-17 victory. UNC sprinted to touchdowns on its first two drives, but Notre Dame surrendered only one field goal from there. Howell threw for 211 yards and a score. He also ran for a touchdown.
• Western Carolina's defense forced four turnovers including a 54-yard scoop-and-score by Ricky Palao, however, Eastern Kentucky, which was playing its ninth game of the season, used big plays and a 28-point fourth quarter to pull away from WCU to win the inaugural Opportunity Bowl, 49-17, over the Catamounts at Roy Kidd Stadium.
BROWN VS. WESTERN CAROLINA
• Mack Brown has only faced Western Carolina once previously in his 32-year head coaching career. At the helm of Appalachain State in 1983, Brown lost 41-15 to the Catamounts in the regular-season finale on Nov. 19 in Cullowhee, N.C.
