UNC To Host 2020 NCAA DI Field Hockey Championship
December 4, 2020 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina will serve as host of the 2020 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship, the NCAA has announced. Originally set for November 2020 in Norfolk, Va., the event will instead be played May 7 and 9, 2021, at Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill.
Old Dominion was set to host the championship this fall, but the NCAA field hockey season was pushed to the spring due to the pandemic and ODU was no longer able to host. This will be UNC's first time hosting the field hockey semifinals and finals since 1987, in the days when the event was not a neutral site but played at the home field of one of the four remaining teams.
"It's another surprise in what's been such an unusual year, but we're thrilled to host the NCAA Championship," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It was disappointing for everyone that the tournament had to be canceled this fall. I know we're all excited to play in the spring and we're honored to know that the season will end in Chapel Hill."
The Tar Heels also will host the championship in 2023, as announced earlier this fall.
UNC did play a fall 2020 season, competing only against fellow Atlantic Coast Conference teams. The Tar Heels finished 10-1 and won the 2020 ACC Championship, which was played at Shelton Stadium.
Carolina is the two-time defending NCAA Champion and has won eight titles overall. The Tar Heels have played at Karen Shelton Stadium since the beginning of the 2018 season and hosted NCAA first and second-round games there in 2018 and 2019.
