Tar Heels Defeat Campbell in Walk-Off Fashion

CHAPEL HILL – Sparked by a three-run home run by Kristina Burkhardt, No. 25 North Carolina defeated Campbell, 11-1 in five innings on Wednesday evening to open the 2020 home slate.
Although Campbell scored first on an RBI-double in the second, the Tar Heels scored 11 unanswered runs for the win. Carolina scattered 12 hits among eight Tar Heels, highlighted by Megan Dray, Lexi Godwin and Burkhardt each with multi-hit games. Freshmen Destiny Middleton and Bri Stubbs each drove in two runners while Burkhardt led UNC with three. Hannah George earned her third win of the season, tossing 2.2 innings of relief.
Following their third extra-inning win of the season, the Tar Heels improve to 4-2 while Campbell drops to 1-5.
Key Moments
» Despite a leadoff single for the Camels to begin the game, Carolina's defense capped off the inning with a 7-3-6-5-4-6 out at third. The steady Tar Heel defense ended the second inning with a similar play at third base.
» Campbell jumped on the board first with an RBI-double to right by Noemi Cortez before another rundown ended frame.
» Sparking a four-run second inning, Godwin singled in the second and Gaby Katz entered to run. Katie Perkins earned an RBI after a trio of walks by Campbell's starting pitcher. Pinch hitter Kiersten Licea gave the Tar Heels a one-run lead on a sac-fly. Middleton added to the scoring and dropped a two-run single in left, upping UNC's lead to 4-1.
» In the third, Dray led off with a single to center. Brittany Pickett singled through the right side before Abby Settlemyre, who scored two runs in the game, loaded the bases on a Campbell miscue. The Tar Heels extended their lead on a second Campbell error before two-run single by Stubbs made it 7-1.
» Carolina added another run in the fourth for an 8-1 edge. Hailey Cole singled through the left side and stole second. Dray singled before Godwin slugged an RBI-double to score Cole.
» In the fifth, Brittany West singled and Stubbs drew a walk to set up for Burkhardt's three-run walk-off home run for the 11-1 win.
