Tar Heels Finish In Tie For Fourth

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The North Carolina Tar Heels women's golf team finished in a tie for fourth in its conclusion at the Moon Golf Invitational on Monday afternoon. Carolina cumulated a team score 3-over-par 867, which was highlighted by Brynn Walker's 1-under-par top-10 finish. Following a postponement of the second round, golfers finished their rounds at 8:30 this morning. Immediately afterwards, the golfers began their third and final round.
Walker, a senior from St. David's, Pa., rallied from a 1-over-par 73 in her opening round to fire two consecutive 1-under-par 71 rounds to close the tournament. The top-10 performance was Walker's best finish since the 2019 Brickyard Collegiate, in which she finished ninth. Notably, Walker was tied for fourth in scoring on par-3s, accruing a 2.92 stroke average and completed the holes at 1-under-par. Additionally, she finished in the top-10 on par-4 scoring, with a stroke average of 4.03.
Freshman Kayla Smith notched her second top-15 finish, tied for 14th, with closing rounds of even-par 72 and 1-over-par 73. Smith's second round featured an eagle on hole No. 11, a 495-yard par-5. Only seven golfers recorded an eagle throughout the two-day event. Smith concluded her final round with two birdies in the last three holes.
Sophomores Jennifer Zhou and Nicole Lu finished in a tie for 21st, with a tournament score of 2-over-par 218. Zhou was third in par-4 scoring, with a stroke average of 3.97. Competing as an individual, Lu opened the Moon Golf Invitational with a 3-under-par 69, which tied her best collegiate round. She would go on to record a 3-over-par 75 and a 2-over-par 74 in the second and third rounds. Lu's performance marks the best finish in her collegiate career, her previous best finish occurred at the 2018 Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, where she finished in a tie for 23rd.
Freshman Krista Junkkari finished with 3-over-par 219, which is her third best performance to par in a young collegiate career.
Mariana Ocano rounded out the Tar Heels' efforts with a 6-over-par 222, which included 37 pars and seven birdies.
The Ole Miss Rebels won the tournament with a 6-under-par 858 team performance.
The Tar Heels will be back in action at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. Known as the "Greatest Show in Women's Collegiate Golf," Carolina will compete from March 6-8 in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
