Tar Heels Finish No. 1 In IWLCA Poll
March 19, 2020 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina women's lacrosse team finished atop the final Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association national poll of the 2020 season, the IWLCA announced on Thursday.
The Tar Heels, who finished the shortened season with a 7-0 overall record and 2-0 mark in ACC play, collected all 25 first-place votes. Notre Dame (7-0) followed in second, with Loyola (5-0), Syracuse (7-1) and Stony Brook (4-1) rounding out the top five. Overall, the ACC had seven teams in the top-25 rankings, the most of any conference.
This marks the third time UNC has finished atop the IWLCA rankings, joining 2013 and 2016.
Carolina opened the year ranked No. 2 in the preseason IWLCA poll, but quickly moved up to No. 1 with wins over James Madison, High Point and Davidson. The Tar Heels then beat then-No. 3 Maryland, 19-6, on Feb. 22 before opening ACC play with wins over Virginia and Louisville.
In its final game of the season, UNC defeated No. 6 Northwestern, 20-18, on March 9 in Evanston, Ill. Three days later, the NCAA announced the cancelation of the 2020 spring sports championships due to concerns of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
In an effort to mitigate the further spread of COVID-19, the ACC announced Tuesday that all athletic activities through the end of the 2019-20 academic year have been canceled. The unanimous decision came after the league's 15 members had previously suspended all competition and activities.
