Tar Heels Begin Spring Season at Carolina Cup
March 6, 2020 | Women's Rowing
CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina opens its spring championship season against Duke and Clemson at the Carolina Cup Saturday at Clemson's Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
"The Carolina Cup is a chance for us to race for the first time and take stock of where we are as a team," interim co-head coach Thomas Revelle said. "We'll see Clemson and Duke several times throughout the season. It'll be a good measuring stick over the course of the spring as we face each other multiple times before ACC Championships in May."
Facing off against the pair of ACC opponents, races begin at 8:30 a.m. with the 3V8 and 4V8. The 2V4 and 1V4 start at 8:42 a.m. and 8:54 a.m., respectively. The 2V8 is set for 9:06 a.m., culminating with the 1V8 at 9:18 a.m. The trophy presentation is set for 11 a.m. The Tar Heels will compete against Duke twice and Clemson three times during the spring season before ACC Championships.
"The whole group has grown this spring," interim co-head coach Emilie Gross said, "whether that's with technical or strength improvements, consistency, leadership, etc. Each has pulled up their weight to lift our team up. Our captains are doing a phenomenal job keeping the team together and united. We have our senior leadership supporting them on a daily basis. Our freshmen are becoming more comfortable."
Following competition Saturday, Carolina travels to Lake Luke, N.C. for its spring break trip.
"We'll focus on rowing and be able to practice twice a day to get quality work in," Revelle said. "We can make switches in boats and hopefully get a clear picture of who belongs in what boat. There will be intrasquad competition to see different lineups. We'll have both technical- and speed-focused practices throughout spring break to be in the best position moving forward toward championships. We'll be spending a lot of time together as a team off the water doing some fun activities during the day."
The Tar Heels wrap up spring break with a scrimmage vs. Columbia on March 14 at Lake Lure before traveling to Philadelphia March 21-22.
"The journey we're on right now is to take it a day at a time to get minuscule amounts faster," Gross said. "If we make small time improvements now, that turns into improved individual 2k erg tests to 2k races to ACC Championships in May. Focusing on small steps now will help us build for ACCs."
