This Day In Tar Heel Baseball History: April 13
April 13, 2020 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILLÂ - North Carolina will begin to look at "On This Day in Tar Heel History", as Tom Jensen will share his memories as an avid Tar Heel fan and regular at Boshamer Stadium.Â
April 13
For today's version of 'This Day in Recent Carolina Baseball History' we go back to 2007 and 2013 for a record setting victory over Duke at the Bosh and a wild series clinching win in extra innings in Blacksburg. Plus quick hits from a trio of road ACC wins in 2008, 2012, and 2019.
There was nothing especially exciting about the Heels' 7-0 victory over the Blue Devils on April 13, 2007 but it provides an excuse to appreciate the greatness of Robert Woodard. He threw a complete game shutout but he didn't really over power anyone. Only four Devils struck out. They got nine hits. There was only 1-2-3 inning the entire game. But when he needed to get outs, he got outs. And that was the story not just of this night but of his entire Tar Heel career. And fittingly this, the 30th win of his career, tied him for all the time program record. His next time out at the Bosh he broke the record and it's one that's likely to stand for a very long time.
The Heels got all the offense they needed in the 2nd. Tim Fedroff drew a one out walk and moved around to 3rd on a single by Kyle Shelton. Garrett Gore singled to bring in Tim, Reid Fronk singled to bring in Kyle, and Seth Williams hit a sac fly to bring in Garrett and make it 3-0.
The Heels didn't get any big rallies the rest of the game but managed to get a single run in 4 different innings:
-In the 4th Garrett singled, stole second, and came around on a single by Seth that gave him his second straight at bat with an RBI.
-In the 5th Chad Flack singled, Tim Fedroff singled to move him to 3rd, and Kyle Shelton brought him around on a sac fly.
-In the 7th Chad went deep to left for a solo home run.
-In the 8th Garrett Gore singled, his 3rd of the day, Reid Fronk hit his second single to move him to 3rd, and Seth Williams brought him around on a sac fly for his 3rd RBI of the day.
Duke got a pair of hits in the 9th and Robert's pitch count was getting pretty high but on a full count he got a line out right back to him to complete the shutout on his 118th pitch of the night. It was a fitting way to tie the all time program wins record.
On April 13, 2013 in Blacksburg the Heels played the most wild game I can ever remember against Virginia Tech. They were trying to clinch the series after a 21-8 win Friday night but the Hokies had by far their best team since joining the ACC that year and it would not be easy.
Things started off well in the 1st. Landon Lassiter doubled and Colin Moran brought him around with a single. Brian Holberton hit an infield single to move Colin over to 2nd, and Cody Stubbs singled up the middle to bring Colin in. Just like that it was 2-0.Â
And in the bottom of the 1st the Hokies scored a pair of their own to tie it right back up. It was that kind of day.
In the top of the 2nd Matt Roberts doubled and Landon Lassiter followed with an infield single. Colin Moran went deep to right and the Heels were back up 5-2.Â
But the Hokies got one back in the bottom of the 3rd to cut it to 5-3.
In the top of the 4th the Heels got it going again. Colin led off with a single, then moved to 2nd on an error. Michael Russell bunted for a hit to load the bases and Mike Zolk hit a sac fly to right to bring in Colin and make it 6-3.Â
But then the Hokies got 3 in the bottom half of the inning and just like that the game was tied back up at 6.
To that point there hadn't been a ton of pitching in the game but both teams went scoreless in the 5th, 6th, and 7th. Benton Moss threw a 1-2-3 5th and got the first 2 outs of the 6th before leaving after a Hokie single. Chris McCue got the last out of the 6th and then threw a 1-2-3 7th.
In the top of the 8th Colin Moran drew a leadoff walk and Brian Holberton (playing at his sister's softball alma mater) went deep to right to put the Heels back up 8-6.Â
But once again the Hokies responded. They got a pair of runs to tie it in the bottom half of the inning and still had the bases loaded with nobody out. Trent Thornton struck out a batter, got a ball right back to the mound from future Oakland A's regular Chad Pinder that he was able to throw home to get the lead runner, and got another strike out to strand the bases loaded.
After the Heels went down in the 9th without scoring, Trent threw a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half. In the top of the 10th Colin Moran drew a leadoff walk- his 5th time reaching base in the game. Brian Holberton bunted him over to 2nd, Cody Stubbs got him to 3rd on a FC, and he came around to give the Heels a 9-8 lead on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the 10th there finally *wasn't* any excitement- Trent just set the Hokies down in order to get the win for a 3 inning outing where he set down the last 9 hitters he faced. That made 9 straight series wins over Virginia Tech since they joined the ACC, a number that now stands at 14.
Colin led the way with 3 hits, including his home run, and 2 walks. He scored all 5 times he reached base and drove in 4. A quartet of other Heels had multi hit games- Brian Holberton (including a home run and 2 RBI), Matt Roberts (both doubles), Landon Lassiter (including a double and 2 runs), and Cody Stubbs.)
And some quick hits from 2008, 2012, and 2019:
-In 2008 the Heels had won the first two games of their series at Clemson to get their first ever weekend series win on the road there. On Sunday they kept it going and made it their first ever sweep, with an 8-4 win to close out the series.Â
Kyle Seager (including his 3rd home run in 2 games, a double, and 3 RBI), Chad Flack (including a double and a pair of RBI's), and Dustin Ackley (including 2 runs) each had 3 hits. Garrett Gore (including a double), Kyle Shelton, and Tim Fedroff had 2 hits each to make it 6 of 9 starters with a multi hit game.Â
Rob Catapano threw 4 innings and only allowed 1 run to get the win for the second day in a row- probably the high point of his Tar Heel career. After he left 4 relievers- Nate Striz, Brian Moran, Rob Wooten, and Tyler Trice- combined to throw 4 no hit innings to close out the game while striking out 5.Â
This may have been the first Heels weekend series win in Clemson but it started a trend- we won there again in 2010 and got another sweep in 2012 to make it 3 wins in a row with a cumulative 8-1 record.Â
-In 2012 the Heels were coming off getting swept in Miami the weekend before and things didn't get much easier with a trip to Charlottesville to take on always strong Virginia.
Kent Emanuel threw a masterpiece, going 8 innings and only allowing 1 run on 3 hits. But the Hoos pitching matched him.Â
The Heels got a run in the 5th when Adam Griffin singled and moved to 2nd on a wild pitch and came around on a Tommy Coyle single, but that was all they could muster during regulation.
In the 7th Virginia loaded the bases with nobody out but after a sac fly that tied the game Kent got the next 2 on a strike out and a grounder to prevent further damage.
R.C. Orlan came on for Kent in the 9th and threw a 1-2-3 inning. With an out in the 10th Jacob Stallings came up and delivered maybe the most memorable home run of his Tar Heel career, going deep to left to give the Heels a 2-1 lead.
Michael Morin came on in the bottom half and threw a 1-2-3 inning for the save and a big win that allowed them to start putting the frustration of the previous weekend in the rear view mirror. Even though none of them led to runs it's worth noting that Michael Russell reached all 5 times up, on 4 singles and a walk.
-In 2019 the Heels had won the opening game of the series in South Bend by scoring 4 runs each in the first 2 innings and putting it away early. On Saturday they did it again. The Heels won 13-6, putting up 4 runs in the 1st inning and another pair each in the 2nd and 4th.
A trio of Heels had 3 hits, led by Dylan Enwiller who hit 2 home runs, drove in 4, and scored 3 times. Ike Freeman (including a home run and a double, 3 RBI, and 3 runs) and Brandon Martorano (including a home run and 2 RBI) also had 3 hits each, and Danny Serretti had a pair. Michael Busch and Ashton McGee each hit one out to make it a total of 6 Heels long balls, and Austin Berger threw 7 innings for the win to clinch the series.
