A History on April 15
April 15, 2020 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – To many, April 15 is Tax Day. However, on this day in Carolina Softball history, the Tar Heels are 18-7-1, highlighted by a sweep of No. 3 Florida State in 2019.
Â
Just one season ago, the Tar Heels won the series against FSU for the first time since 2011, snapping a 16-game losing streak that dated back to 2013. Beginning the series on Saturday, April 13, the Seminoles scored four runs in the final two innings for an 8-6 win and the series lead. After a water-logged weekend, the Tar Heels were poised to make history on Monday evening live on ESPNU.
Â
The ACC foes took the field on nearly perfect Monday afternoon for game one of the doubleheader at 4:02 p.m. Both teams scored in the first, third and fourth innings, resulting in a one-run Carolina lead. The Tar Heels were one out away from their first top-five win in program history as an RBI-single knotted the game in the seventh inning. A solo shot by Florida State's Sydney Sherrill looked to seal it off for the Noles in the ninth. However, the Tar Heels would not quit. On a 1-2 count, Brittany Pickett knocked an RBI-single through the right side to tie the game. Pitching around Megan Dray, senior Berlynne Delamora gave UNC its first walk-off win of the season with a single to left for the 6-5 win.
Â
Turning around nearly 30 minutes later, Carolina and FSU took the field for the series finale under the lights of Anderson Stadium. It would only take one run to determine the nightcap's winner. Following a leadoff single by senior Destiny DeBerry, an error and back-to-back fielder's choices by Kristina Burkhardt and Kiani Ramsey put Carolina on the board as DeBerry crossed the plate for the 1-0 lead. Retiring 12-straight batters from the third through sixth innings, Hannah George went the distance for her ninth career win and UNC's sixth of nine wins over top-25 teams during the 2019 season.
Â
Prior to the 2020 season, the pair of victories over No. 3 Florida State marked North Carolina's highest-ranked wins since the inception of the USA TODAY/NFCA Division I Coaches Poll in 1995. However, the Tar Heels topped that mark in the shortened 2020 campaign with a 9-8 walk-off victory against No. 2 Alabama during Opening Weekend at Florida State.
