CHAPEL HILLÂ - North Carolina will begin to look at "On This Day in Tar Heel History", as Tom Jensen will share his memories as an avid Tar Heel fan and regular at Boshamer Stadium.Â
May 10
For today's version of 'This Day in Recent Carolina Baseball History' we go back to 2008 and 2016 for a series clinching win in Charlottesville thanks to an amazing outing by Rob Wooten and the Heels' second blowout of ECU of the season. Plus quick hits from 2011 and 2017.
On May 10, 2008 the Heels were coming off a win Friday night over Virginia on the road. In the second game of the series they were hoping to accomplish something that the incredible 2006 and 2007 teams that played in the finals of the College World Series hadn't been able to- win a series against the Hoos.
Adam Warren threw a scoreless 1st but Virginia got one in the 2nd to take a 1-0 lead. Kyle Shelton went deep in the 3rd to tie it back up at 1.
Adam threw a scoreless 3rd and in the 4th the Heels got their first big rally going. Chad Flack got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Kyle Seager doubled to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Tim Federowicz hit a fly ball so deep that not only did it bring in Chad, it also allowed Kyle to move up to 3rd. Garrett Gore hit a flyball of his own and Kyle was able to come home and score to give the Heels a 3-1 lead.
Virginia got one back in the 4th but in the 5th the Heels got right back to it. Kyle Shelton drew a leadoff walk and after Chad Flack replaced him on 1st after a FC Kyle Seager got another big hit, tripling to bring Chad all the way around and make it 4-2. Tim Federowicz followed with a single to score Kyle and make it 5-2.
In the 5th Virginia got runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out and the Heels went to Rob Wooten.
Rob Wooten had an awesome junior year for us in 2007, moving seamlessly into the setup role Jonathan Hovis had done so well in 2006 ahead of Andrew Carignan. He had a 2.35 ERA while striking out 58 in 53.2 innings.
His senior year he became the top reliever, and he performed even better. He had a 1.87 ERA while striking out 73 in 62.2 innings.
This was one of his best days in a great season. He struck out the first guy he faced on 3 pitches. He let future big leaguer Phil Gosselin have one ball, then struck him out on 4 pitches. End of the threat.
Then he threw a 1-2-3 6th, punctuated by a strikeout of future big leaguer Jarrett Parker. And he threw a scoreless 7th. And he threw a 1-2-3 8th. He finally allowed a single with 1 out in the 9th- and then got the next couple guys in order to end the game.
It was an incredible performance- Rob stranded the 2 guys he inherited in scoring position, retired 14 of 16 guys he faced, allowing only a single and a walk, and struck out 7 of them. He got a well deserved win, and the Heels had the elusive series win against Virginia that they lacked the previous two years.Â
The win pushed the Heels to 42-8 on the season and a remarkable 20-5 in ACC play. They only had one weekend at Miami left in their quest for a season with no conference series losses. Kyle Shelton (a home run and a triple) and Kyle Seager (a triple and a double) each had a pair of hits to lead the Heels offense. A pair of RBI for Tim Federowicz were key to the winning effort as well.Â
On May 10, 2016 the Heels hosted East Carolina at the Bosh. The Pirates were very good that year- they won a regional and the first game of a super, coming as close as they ever have to Omaha. But the Heels already had a 17-4 win over the Pirates in March on their resume and were going for the season sweep.
Hunter Williams started for the Heels and threw a scoreless 1st. In the bottom half Brian Miller hit a leadoff double but he was still there after a couple of outs. Logan Warmoth singled to move him up to 3rd and keep the inning going and then Brandon Riley singled as well to bring Brian around and give the Heels a 1-0 lead.
Hunter threw a scoreless second as well and ended his day with a pair of shutout innings. AJ Bogucki came in next and threw a scoreless 3rd and 4th.
In the bottom half of the 4th Brandon Riley hit a leadoff double and Zack Gahagan singled to put runners on the corners with no one out. An Eli Sutherland grounder brought Brandon home and gave the Heels a 2-0 lead.
AJ threw a scoreless 5th and in the bottom
Tyler Ramirez hit a solo shot to expand the lead  to 3-0. AJ came back out and threw a 1-2-3 6th.
It was still a relatively close game at this point but in the bottom of the 6th the dam broke. Brandon Riley and Zack Gahagan drew walks and Eli Sutherland got hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Kyle Datres worked a walk to bring in Brandon and make it 4-0. Brian Miller walked to make it 5-0. A wild pitch made it 6-0. Tyler Ramirez walked to load the bases again.
The Heels were having a huge inning even though they didn't have any hits. Logan Warmoth changed that. He singled to bring in a pair of runs and make it 8-0, capping a 5 run inning with just the 1 hit.
AJ got the first out of the 7th and departed having thrown 4.1 scoreless innings for which he earned the win. Spencer Trayner came in with runners on the corners and got a strikeout and a groundout to leave them there, and followed it up with a 1-2-3 8th.
The Heels got one more run in their half of the 8th after Adam Pate reached on an error and Tyler Ramirez doubled to bring him home. The Pirates finally got a run in the 9th but Taylor Sugg prevented further damage, giving the Heels a 9-1 win and a combined score of 26-5 in their two wins over ECU that season.
Virginia had kind of a tough regular season and then caught fire in June and won the College World Series. It's rarely the best team in the regular season who wins it all.Â
A rotation led by Zac Gallen and JB Bukauskas with the core of a lineup that would end up being the number 2 national seed in the country the following year certainly could have done some things in June if it was given the chance.Â
And it earned the chance- something that's reinforced to me when I remember a night like this where we pounded ECU for a second time head to head, had a much higher RPI than them, and it didn't end up counting for anything on selection day.
Brandon Riley (including a double and 2 runs) and Logan Warmoth (including a pair of RBI) each had 3 hits for the Heels. Tyler Ramirez (including a home run and a double and a couple RBI) and Zack Gahagan each had a pair of hits. A Brian Miller double and an Adam Pate single rounded out the hits for the day.Â
And quick hits from 2011 and 2017:
-In 2011 the Heels went down to Wilmington and beat the Seahawks 11-5. Greg Holt had one of the biggest days of his career at the plate with 4 hits, including a home run and a double, driving in 5 runs and scoring 3 times. Coach Jesse Wierzbicki (including a double and 3 runs) and Chaz Frank (including 3 RBI) each had 3 hits. Levi Michael also had a pair, and Parks Jordan contributed a double.
Cody Stiles started and had one of his best outings as a Heel, going 7 innings, striking out 6, and allowing just a couple of runs to earn the win. Cody Penny threw 1.2 scoreless innings where he allowed just a single hit to close it out.
-In 2017 the Heels beat UNC-Asheville 16-4. Brian Miller (including a double, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored) and Brandon Riley (including a double, an RBI, and a run) each had 3 hits. Ashton McGee (including a home run, 3 RBI, and 2 runs) and Logan Warmoth (including a double and 3 runs) each had a pair of hits. Tyler Lynn and Brendan Illies each doubled and drove in a run, and Josh Ladowski hit a single and drove in a pair.
Bo Weiss started and threw 3 solid innings, allowing just 1 run. Austin Bergner got the win for 2 scoreless innings of relief. Jason Morgan threw a scoreless 8th and Cole Aker threw a scoreless 9th to close it out.Â
