This Day In Tar Heel Baseball History: May 11
May 11, 2020 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILLÂ - North Carolina will begin to look at "On This Day in Tar Heel History", as Tom Jensen will share his memories as an avid Tar Heel fan and regular at Boshamer Stadium.Â
May 11
For today's version of 'This Day in Recent Carolina Baseball History' we go back to 2007 and 2012 for a record setting evening for Robert Woodard and a Kent Emanuel-Marcus Stroman pitching duel in Durham. Plus quick hits from 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2019.
Robert Woodard came into his final regular season series at the Bosh tied with Michael Hoog for the all time program wins record with 30. On May 11, 2007 he went for the record against Georgia Tech.
The Jackets got a run in the 1st but that would prove to be the high point of their day. Robert threw a scoreless 2nd and in the bottom of the inning the bats got going. Tim Federowicz hit a leadoff single and Josh Horton worked a full count and then went deep. 2-1 Heels.
Chad Flack singled, Garrett Gore walked, and Benji Johnson got hit by a pitch to load the bases with 1 out. Reid Fronk doubled to center to bring in Chad and Garrett and make it 4-1 and with 2 outs Dustin Ackley singled to bring home Benji and make it 5-1.
Robert threw a 1-2-3 3rd. And a scoreless 4th. In the bottom of the 4th Reid Fronk got hit- as he did a lot- with 1 down. After another out Dustin Ackley went deep to left center to make it a 7-1 Heels advantage.
The Jackets got one back in the 5th but in the bottom the Heels scored more. Chad Flack and Garrett Gore singled. Kyle Seager came up- as a PINCH HITTER- a reminder of how much he grew as a player during his time at UNC that he wasn't an every day starter his freshman year. He singled too to load the bases.
Reid Fronk hit a fly ball so deep that not only did Chad score, the other runners advanced too. And that allowed both Garrett and Kyle to come home when Seth Williams singled to center, making it a 10-2 Heels lead.
Robert threw a scoreless 6th and was unscathed other than a solo shot in the 7th. He finished his day with 7 innings pitched, just 3 harmless runs allowed, and no walks. Now it was up to the bullpen to finish off his record setting night.
Tyler Trice threw a scoreless 8th. Rob Wooten came on for the 9th and got the first 2 Jackets out. Brian Moran entered and got a strike out to finish the game and officially make Robert Woodard the winningest pitcher in program history.
This is a good opportunity to just take a step back and appreciate Robert's career. He finished 34-5 with a 3.05 ERA. He was a consistent winner over his 4 years- 8-2 his freshman year, 8-0 his sophomore year, 7-1 his junior year, and 11-2 his senior year.Â
It's pretty unusual in college baseball to make that strong of a contribution your freshman year and also be around doing it your senior year so I wouldn't be surprised if his record stands for many decades to come.
Tim Federowicz led the Heels with 3 hits and 4 other guys had a pair of hits- Dustin Ackley (including a home run and 3 RBI), Josh Horton (including a home run and 2 RBI), Chad Flack (including a couple of runs), and Kyle Seager. Reid Fronk had a double and drove in 3 runs, and Seth Williams drove in a pair of runs as well.Â
On May 11, 2012 Kent Emanuel and Marcus Stroman faced off in the opening game of UNC's series at Duke. Sometimes you look back with the hindsight of a decade or two and see a college baseball pitching matchup, and think wow that was an impressive match. You didn't need the passage of time to know that about this showdown- we knew in real time that these were a couple special pitchers, and their faceoff did not disappoint.
Kent struck out the side in the 1st and in the top of the 2nd the Heels pounced. With 2 outs Parks Jordan worked a full count and then singled to keep the inning going. Adam Griffin hit a single of his own to put runners on the corners.
1st and 3rd with 2 down is a situation- especially if we think it's going to be a low scoring game where runs are at a premium- where we love to send the runner on 1st, hope the opposing team throws it down there and gets him in a rundown, and then send the guy on 3rd home and hope he scores before they either tag out the guy in the rundown or throw home for the lead off runner.
Usually it works and we get to trade the out for the run. And sometimes it works really well and it just frazzles the other team and they throw it away. That's what happened here. The catcher threw the ball into the outfield so not only did Parks score, Adam went all the way to 3rd.
That brought up Chaz Frank. Writing about these old games has given me a new appreciation for what a good player Chaz was. I think the teams he was on were just so stacked with super star players that it was easy for him to get lost in the shuffle.Â
He finished his career with an OBP close to .400, he stole more than 50 bases, and even though he never had a ton of power he hit 37 doubles and had 15 triples over the years he was in the every day lineup because of his speed. He also played well in the outfield. And he had a knack for getting big hits.Â
Here he fell behind 1-2 and then hit one of those triples to right center, scoring Adam to give the Heels a 2-0 lead. That ended up being the end of our scoring for the day, so it was a huge hit.
Kent threw a 1-2-3 2nd. And a 1-2-3 3rd. He let Duke get a couple runners on in the 4th and then ended the inning with a strikeout.
He threw a 1-2-3 5th. He allowed a 2 out walk in the 6th but retired the next guy to end the inning. Finally in the 7th Duke hit a double and a single to start the inning, cutting the lead to 2-1 and putting the tying run on 1st. Kent proceeded to pick him off and retire the next 2 hitters.
In the bottom of the 8th Duke got a leadoff single. The next hitter tried to bunt but Kent fielded it well and threw out the lead runner. And then he got a double play to end the threat.
Kent went 8 innings, struck out 6, only allowed 1 run, and showed that he was a pretty good defensive pitcher too. Stroman was great as well- 7 innings, 8 strikeouts, 2 runs allowed. But he wasn't as great as Kent.
Michael Morin came on for the 9th and only needed 6 pitches to retire the side in order to win the game 2-1 and give him his 15th save of the season. It was also a good start to the Heels' final push to earn a national seed.
Chaz- including his RBI triple- was the only Heel with multiple hits for the day. Colin Moran, Brian Holberton, Cody Stubbs, Parks Jordan, and Adam Griffin each had hits as well. And quick hits from 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2019:
-In 2011 the Heels beat UNC-Asheville 4-2 at the Bosh. Coach Bryant Gaines had one of the best starts of his career, going 6 innings and allowing only 3 hits, walking no one, and striking out 6.Â
Unfortunately it took the bats a little time to heat up so he didn't get the win. Tate Parrish struck out the only hitter he faced to start the 7th and then Andrew Smith retired both he faced to close out the inning. The Heels took the lead in the bottom half and he got the win, making him 3-0 on the season.
Shane Taylor struck out the side in the 8th and Michael Morin struck out the side in the 9th to earn the save.
Chaz Frank (including a triple and an RBI) and Ben Bunting (including an RBI and a run) each had a pair of hits for the Heels. Levi Michael (driving in and scoring a run), Matt Roberts (scoring a run) and Colin Moran had the other hits for the day.
-In 2013 the Heels evened the series in Atlanta with a 3-1 win over Georgia Tech. Benton Moss had an incredible outing, going 8 shutout inning and allowing only 2 hits while striking out 5. The win pushed his record on the season to 8-1. Trent Thornton threw the 9th to get his 5th save of the year.
Michael Russell led the way for the Heels with 3 hits, driving in and scoring one. Chaz Frank had a double and scored a run. Brian Holberton had a single and drove in a run and also walked a couple times. Korey Dunbar hit a single and drove in a run. Mike Zolk, Cody Stubbs, and Landon Lassiter had the other Heels hits.
-In 2014 the Heels avoided getting swept with a 5-4 win over Florida State at the Bosh. Reilly Hovis got the win for 4.1 innings of relief where he only allowed 1 run and struck out 8, pushing his record to 7-1 for the season.
Parks Jordan had a pair of hits and drove in and scored a run. Tom Zengel doubled and drove in and scored a run. Korey Dunbar, Tyler Ramirez, and Landon Lassiter each singled and drove in a run. Michael Russell and Alex Raburn each drew a pair of walks and scored a run and Adam Pate got walked and scored a run as well. The Heels' other hit, by Joe Dudek, came off Seminole relief pitcher (o and also Heisman Trophy winner) Jameis Winston.Â
-In 2019 the Heels beat Pittsburgh 10-6 and I'll get to the details of the game but first I have to give a shout out to Kyle Datres' family, one of the most supportive families we've ever had in this program. When Kyle was playing on the team his parents and his aunt moved from Williamsport, PA down to North Carolina for the season so they could be at all the games. And his mom Cindy gave me a run for my money as the loudest person in the stadium during the years he was here, which is a good thing!
By this time last year Kyle was tearing it up for the Asheville Tourists in the Rockies organization but his parents still made the trek 3.5 hours each way from Williamsport to Pittsburgh and back to support the team even without him on it it anymore. And then they drove down to Chapel Hill when we were hosting the postseason the next month. So all our parents are awesomely supportive but the Datres' are definitely on the All Star team and it was great to see them at this game.
Anyway Aaron Sabato led the way for the Heels with a home run and a double, driving in 3 runs. Dylan Harris (including a double and a couple runs), Brandon Martorano (driving in 3), and Ashton McGee (scoring twice) each had a pair of hits as well. Michael Busch had a single and drove in a couple runs, Jackson Hesterlee had a single and scored a couple runs, and Danny Serretti and Dylan Enwiller each singled and scored a run.
Austin Bergner had one of the best days of his Tar Heel career on the mound, going 8 innings and allowing only 2 hits and a walk while striking out 7. After he left the 9th got a little dicey but Hansen Butler got the last 2 outs to end it and push Austin's record on the season to 5-0.
