NCAA Releases 2018-19 Data
Seventeen University of North Carolina varsity athletics teams exceeded the national average for the past four years in the NCAA's Academic Progress Rates and 13 squads posted perfect 1000s in 2018-19.
Â
The APRs released today include single-year scores for 2018-19 and four-year rates that reflect scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.
Â
The NCAA uses the Academic Progress Rate to track the academic performance of scholarship students who compete on varsity teams. The score measures eligibility and retention each semester by student athletes at every NCAA institution.
Â
The 17 programs that exceeded the national four-year rate include men's basketball, men's and women's fencing, men's golf, gymnastics, women's lacrosse, rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming and diving, women's tennis, men's indoor and outdoor track and field, volleyball and wrestling. Men's lacrosse equaled the national average, four sports (baseball, women's golf and women's indoor and outdoor track and field) were within one or two points and two (field hockey and football) were within five of the national average.
Â
All 28 Tar Heel teams posted four-year rates of 959 or higher and 27 had four-year rates of at least 970. That includes 14 teams that scored a 990 or higher in their respective four-year rates.
Â
Carolina's overall four-year rate is 985 and its single-year rate for 2018-19 was 980. It's the sixth consecutive year the Tar Heels' single-year rate was 980 or higher.
Â
Individual teams that rated a 1000 in 2018-19 included women's cross country, women's fencing, field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, softball, women's tennis, volleyball and wrestling.
Â
The NCAA previously announced the programs that finished in the Top 10 percent nationally in their respective sports, which included seven UNC teams that scored perfect 1000s over the last four years – women's fencing, men's golf, women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, women's swimming and diving and women's tennis.
