On This Date May 28: Anundsen/Long Win NCAA Doubles Crown
May 28, 2020 | Women's Tennis
ATHENS, Georgia (2007)
North Carolina seniors Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long finished the most successful doubles run in school history with a national championship on Monday, May 28, 2007, when they defeated William & Mary's Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 to claim the NCAA title at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Anundsen and Long became the first Tar Heels ever to win an NCAA championship in tennis after knocking off the tournament's No. 1 overall seed.
Things got off to an ominous start for UNC, as the top-ranked duo of Moulton-Levy and Zoricic scored a dominant 6-1 win in the opening set. That loss was just the second dropped set of the tournament for the Tar Heels, and the first time they had failed to win the opener.
But just as they did after dropping the second set to TCU on Sunday, Anundsen and Long responded in impressive fashion. The Carolina tandem would lose just four games the rest of the way, winning the final two sets by matching scores of 6-2 and 6-2.
"We got blown out in the first set and we weren't sure what hit us," Long said. "They are a great team, but we didn't give up and we played much better in the second and third sets."
With the score tied at 2-2 in the second set, Anundsen and Long broke the Tribe and proceeded to win the last four games of the frame to even the match. Leading the final set 2-1, Carolina fought off three break points at 2-1 to hold serve and take a commanding 3-1 advantage. The two squads would trade breaks to make it 4-2 before the Tar Heels took the final two games to secure the match and the NCAA championship.
Anundsen and Long finish their senior year with a record of 29-6, including a 24-3 mark in dual match play. In addition to being NCAA champions, the pair earned two-time All-America honors for their accomplishments in doubles action. Moutlon-Levy and Zoricic concluded their season with a school-record mark of 44-4.
