June 15
For today's version of 'This Day in Recent Carolina Baseball History' we go back to 2007 and 2008 for a pair of College World Series opening wins, one highlighted by an incredible unexpected performance out of the bullpen by Adam Warren after the Heels got behind 4-0 early and the other featuring 3 clutch hits by Seth Williams and a great start for Alex White.Â
On June 15, 2007 the Heels kicked off their second straight trip to the College World Series against Mississippi State. Things got off to a tough start. The Bulldogs scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning and still had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 out. The Heels went ahead and turned to midweek starter Adam Warren out of the bullpen and he got a groundout to prevent things from getting any worse than they already were.
Adam had a great outing that kept the Heels in the game. He threw both a scoreless 3rd and 4th, both times allowing only a 2 out hit. Meanwhile the Heels had 4 base runners over the first three times hitting but couldn't get anyone across.
In the bottom of the 4th Dustin Ackley drew a leadoff walk and with one out Josh Horton singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Chad Flack made it 2 hits in 2 pitches, singling up the middle on the first pitch he saw to score Dusty and get the game within 4-1. After the second out of the inning Benji Johnson came up with a big single to get Josh home and cut the deficit to 4-2.
In the 5th Adam gave up a leadoff single but then got a fly out and erased the runner on an inning ending double play. He threw a scoreless 6th sandwiched around a 1 out walk.Â
He finished his day with 4.1 scoreless innings where he struck out 4 and allowed only 3 hits and a walk- never more than one base runner an inning. What made Adam's outing especially impressive is there was no way when the game started that he knew he would end up having to pitch that night- he'd been starting all year. He really rose to the occasion when he found himself surprisingly on the spot.
In the bottom of the 6th Josh Horton got hit by a pitch and Chad Flack singled with one out. Seth Williams hit a ball to 3rd that was misplayed, allowing Josh to come around and score and get the game to within 4-3. Benji Johnson came up with his second big hit of the game, doubling to left center to score Chad and tie the game up. Garrett Gore drew a walk and the bases were loaded.
That brought up Reid Fronk. And he gave the Heels the lead by doing what he often did when the team really needed a spark- getting hit by a pitch. That brought in a run to put the Heels up 5-4. On the very next pitch Tim Fedroff hit a very deep sac fly- so deep that it not only scored a run but also accomplished the unusual feat of moving the runners on both 1st and 2nd into scoring position.
Getting the runners to 2nd and 3rd ended up being especially key because Dustin Ackley, after falling behind 1-2, came up with a single to left that allowed them to both come home. That gave the Heels a 6 run 6th and and an 8-4 lead. And since Adam was the pitcher of record the rally ended up giving him a win that pushed him to 11-0 on the year.
Rob Wooten came on for the 7th and started his outing with a pair of strikeouts before a solo shot by future long time big leaguer Mitch Moreland made it 8-5. But he got the last out of the inning and then followed it up with a 1-2-3 8th.
Andrew Carignan came on for the 9th and was his usual dominant self. He got a strikeout, a fly out, and another strike out to quickly end the game and send the Heels on to the winners bracket. The collective bullpen was definitely the MVP for the day- 7.1 innings, just 1 run on 5 hits and a walk, and 8 strikeouts. Pretty hard to ask for much more than that.Â
Chad Flack hadn't had an amazing regular season but as always he shone on the big stage- 3 hits, driving in and scoring a run. Benji Johnson (including a double, 2 RBI, and a run), Josh Horton (including 2 runs), and Tim Fedroff (including an RBI) each had a pair of hits. Garrett Gore doubled and scored a run, Dustin Ackley singled, drove in a pair of runs, and scored one, and Tim Federowicz had a single. Reid Fronk drove in and scored a run, and Seth Williams scored one. The win made the Heels 54-13 for the season.Â
On June 15, 2008 the Heels kicked off their now third annual family vacation to Omaha against LSU. The Tigers got a home run from the first hitter of the game, but that represented the peak of their evening. Alex White retired the side 1-2-3 after that.
It didn't take long for the Heels bats to get going in the 1st. Dustin Ackley, Kyle Shelton, and Tim Fedroff hit back to back to back singles to load the bases with nobody out. Tim Federowicz walked to score Dusty, Kyle Seager singled to score Kyle #1, and Chad Flack hit a sac fly to score Tim #1 and give the Heels an early 3-1 lead.
The 2nd followed the same pattern as the first. The Tigers got a leadoff solo shot but then Álex retired the side in order, including a strikeout of future big league star DJ LeMahieu. He followed that up with a 1-2-3 3rd.
In the bottom Tim Fedroff and Tim Federowicz hit back to back singles to lead off the inning and with 1 out Kyle Seager reached on an error to load the bases. Garrett Gore brought in a run with a FC and then Seth Williams hit a big 2 out single to score another one and push the Heels lead up to 5-2.
Alex threw a scoreless 4th sandwiched around a 2 out HBP. In the Heels half of the inning they struck again. Ryan Graepel and Dustin Ackley singled on back to back pitches and Kyle Shelton bunted them into scoring position. The next hitter struck out but with 2 down a wild pitch brought Ryan home and gave the Heels a 6-2 lead.
Alex threw a scoreless 5th with the Tigers getting just a 1 out single. The Heels continued their streak of putting together a run scoring rally almost every inning. Kyle Seager hit a leadoff double and Garrett Gore bunted him over to 3rd. Seth Williams came up with his second 2 out out run scoring single in 3 innings to bring Kyle around for a 7-2 advantage.
LSU got runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out in the 6th, their biggest run scoring threat of the day. But Alex dug deep and got a groundout that failed to advance the runners, then a pop up from DJ LeMahieu to strand them.
Alex set the Tigers down 1-2-3 in the 7th and the Heels strung something together on offense one last time. Kyle Seager singled to lead off the 7th and with one out a Garrett Gore  grounder moved him into scoring position. For his third at bat in a row that brought up Seth Williams with 2 outs and the opportunity to drive in a run. And for the third at bat in a row he delivered. He doubled to left to score Kyle and give the Heels an 8-2 lead.
LSU got a leadoff single in the 8th and Alex exited the game after throwing 7 innings where he allowed only 4 hits and 2 walks and struck out 6. The win made him 11-3 for the season and his memorable 2008 College World Series was just getting started.
LSU got a run and had the bases loaded with nobody out in the 8th and a chance to get back into the game. But Brian Moran got a strike out and then Rob Wooten came in and after allowing a single that got the Tigers to within 8-4 and brought the tying run to the plate, he coaxed a double play that ended the inning and preserved a 4 run lead for the Heels.
Rob came back out for the 9th and got the first couple outs. LSU didn't go away easily- they put a couple runners on base thanks to a double and a walk. But Rob got a groundout to 1st to end the game and send the Heels into the winners bracket. His clutch 1.2 scoreless innings earned his 5th save of the season.
Seth Williams (including a double and 3 RBI), Kyle Seager (including a double, a pair of runs, and an RBI), Tim Fedroff (including 2 runs), and Ryan Graepel (including a run) each had 3 hits for the Heels. Kyle Shelton and Dustin Ackley both had a pair of hits and scored a run. Tim Federowicz singled and drove in a run to round out the hitting and Chad Flack drove in and scored a run and Garrett Gore drove in a run as well. All nine Heels starters contributed to a run being scored and 6 of them had multi hit games. The win took the team to 52-12 for the season.Â
