Devin Kane Talks Returning To The Mat, Brother Joining UNC Wrestling
June 22, 2020 | Wrestling
Next up in UNC Wrestling's offseason Q&A series is R-Jr. Devin Kane, who made it to the Round of 12 at the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships for the Tar Heels.
Â
The 174-pound standout missed last season due to injury, but appears primed to step into the Tar Heel lineup once again and help Carolina compete throughout the 2020-21 season.
Â
This week, he sat down with GoHeels.com to discuss many things, including his anticipated return.
Â
GoHeels: After not wrestling last year, in what ways do you think the year off the mat may have helped you improve moving forward?
Â
Devin Kane: Taking the past year off to recover helped me get my body healthy and back to 100-percent. Being able to now wrestle with a shoulder that is fully healed helps me compete at a much higher level and with greater confidence.
Â
GH: What was it like to watch your team have the success that it did last season?
Â
DK: It was a new experience watching the team from the outside in. It was perhaps the only time I've had to watch this team compete and succeed while I was not competing myself. It was great to see the team succeed as they did last season, and I'm ready to be back on the mat alongside them.
Â
GH: What are your biggest goals for yourself and the team this season?
Â
DK: My personal goal for the upcoming season is to become an All-American at 174 pounds. And as a team, our goal is to become ACC champions with a strong showing at NCAAs.
Â
GH: Your brother, Gavin, is joining the team this season. What are your thoughts on having him in Chapel Hill?
Â
DK: I'm excited to have Gavin join the team next year. This is the first time we will ever be in school at the same time so it will be cool to see him around campus and in the wrestling room. It will also be unique to train with him at a high level since we are the same weight class.
Â
GH: How would you describe the current team culture in Chapel Hill?
Â
DK:Â The team has bought in as a whole. Everyone has similar goals and no one is shying away from putting in the work on the mat to achieve those goals. It's a close-knit group that is all-in.
