This Day In Tar Heel Baseball History: June 5

CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina looks at "On This Day in Tar Heel History", as Tom Jensen shares his memories as an avid Tar Heel fan and regular at Boshamer Stadium.
June 5
For today's version of 'This Day in Recent Carolina Baseball History' we go back to June 5, 2011 for a regional clinching game in honor of Coach Fox's late mother. She had passed away the day before and the team wore pink socks to honor her.
Coach Forbes led the team for the weekend and did a great job of it while Coach Fox was spending time with his family- a true sign that a baseball coach has his priorities right when he's willing to be away during the postseason in order to put family first. I'm sure that would have been an easy decision for him anyway, but it was made easier by having someone like Coach Forbes there to seamlessly step in.
The Heels were taking on James Madison and hoping for a win to set up a Super Regional the next weekend against Stanford at the Bosh. The Dukes got off to an early 1-0 lead but in the 2nd the Heels (who were the road team) responded quickly. Jacob Stallings drew a leadoff walk and Ben Bunting singled on the next pitch.
That put runners on 1st and 2nd for Brian Holberton and he hit the first pitch he saw for a double down the right field line, bringing around Jacob to tie the game at 1. Seth Baldwin followed with a walk to load the bases. Chaz Frank worked a full count and then singled through the right side to score Ben and put the Heels up 2-1.
Chris Munnelly was on the hill and he threw a scoreless 2nd, allowing only a 1 out single, and followed it up with a 1-2-3 3rd. JMU got a pair of singles with 2 outs in the 4th but Chris forced a groundout to end the threat.
In the 5th Tommy Coyle singled and Ben Bunting reached on an error with 2 outs to put runners on 1st and 2nd. That brought up Brian Holberton and once again he came up with a big hit, singling to center to score a run and give the Heels a 3-1 lead.
The Dukes got a single and then a home run to lead off the 5th and tie the game. After a 2 out single RC Orlan came on in relief and got a grounder to end the inning. In the 6th Levi Michael doubled with one out and Colin Moran got hit by a pitch. But the next hitter made an out.
That brought Tommy Coyle to the plate with 2 down and runners on 1st and 2nd. He fell behind 1-2 but then came up with a big single through the right side that scored Levi and put the Heels up 4-3. Jacob Stallings followed with a ground rule double- not something you see too often at the Bosh- that scored Colin to make it 5-3.
RC got the first 2 outs in the 6th and Tate Parrish came on with runners on 1st and 2nd. He fell behind 3-1 but then got a foul out to 3rd to end the threat. In the 7th Seth Baldwin hit a 1 out double, moved up a base on a wild pitch, and came in on a Chaz Frank single to extend the lead to 6-3.
Shane Taylor got the first 2 outs for the Heels in the bottom of the inning. Andrew Smith came in with runners on 2nd and 3rd and got a fly out on the very first pitch he threw to strand them where they were.
In the 8th the Heels finally blew the game open for good. Coach Jesse Wierzbicki hit a leadoff double and Tommy Coyle hit a single to bring him in. 7-3. Jacob Stallings got hit by a pitch and after that Tommy stole 3rd. That allowed him to come in and score on a groundball by Ben Bunting that the Dukes misplayed. 8-3. Brian Holberton singled to load the bases and Chaz Frank hit a sac fly that allowed Jacob to come home and make it 9-3.
Smitty threw a 1-2-3 8th and Michael Morin came on for the 9th to close it out. He got a fly out, a pop out, and another fly out to retire JMU in order and make the Heels the 2011 Chapel Hill Regional Champions. Over the course of the weekend with Coach Fox gone the team outscored their opponents 27-3, an inspired performance in honor of his mother.
RC Orlan got his second win of the season and the win improved the Heels record for the year to 48-14. It also made them 15-0 in home regional games during the Coach Fox era, a pretty amazing winning streak. When you add in Supers the Heels were 23–1 at home in the postseason from 2006-2011. The win set up a date with Stanford at the Bosh for Supers the next weekend.
Brian Holberton (including a double and 2 RBI) and Tommy Coyle (including 2 RBI and a run) led the way for the Heels with 3 hits each. Chaz Frank had a pair of hits and drove in 3 runs.
All 9 Heels starters ended up getting at least one hit. Jacob Stallings doubled, scored 3 times, and drove in a run. Jesse Wierzbicki, Levi Michael, and Seth Baldwin each doubled and scored a run. Ben Bunting singled and drove in and scored a run and Colin Moran singled and scored a run to round out the hitting for the Heels.
