SOUTHAMPTON, Pa. - Carolina quarterback Sam Howell has been placed on the Maxwell Award watch list, announced Friday by The Maxwell Football Club.
A native of Indian Trail, North Carolina, Howell enjoyed one of the finest seasons by a freshman quarterback in college football history in 2019. He was an FWAA Freshman All-America and the ACC Offensive & Overall Rookie of the Year after setting the FBS true freshman record and Carolina school record with 38 touchdown passes in 2019.
The 2019 Military Bowl MVP put together a streak of 13 consecutive games with multiple TD passes and had eight games with three or more TD passes. Howell's 3,641 passing yards was second in the ACC and ranked 14th nationally.
Tar Heel legend Charlie Justice is the only player in program history to win the Maxwell Award in 1948.
The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell, a former standout at the Swarthmore College and a renowned sports writer and football official.
