Jones’ Brace Propels Women's Soccer By WFU, 4-1
September 17, 2020 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL – Rachel Jones netted a pair of goals in a rain-soaked 4-1 win against Wake Forest in the North Carolina's season opener on Thursday.
With the win, UNC improved to 35-5-2 in season opening games and 37-2-3 in home openers.
After shaking off two defenders at the top of the box, Brianna Pinto gave the Tar Heels their initial lead at the 21-minute mark with her first score of the season. The Tar Heels were quick to extend their lead after Rachel Jones took advantage of a miscue by the Wake Forest goalkeeper.
Jones stole the ball from the goalkeeper and found the upper-right of the net to give UNC a 2-0 lead in the 23rdminute.
"We just wanted to get out there and have a lot of energy tonight," said Jones. "We wanted to be able to take control of what we could on the field. I was really excited to see everyone get after it and have the type of chemistry we had. It was really impressive after not being able to play together for so long."
Wake Forest answered in the 35th minute with a goal off of a corner kick. The goal cut the UNC lead to 2-1 and the advantage would remain until halftime.
In the 58th minute, Jones took advantage of a Wake Forest foul in the penalty box and scored her second goal of the contest in the lower-right side of the net off of the Tar Heels' first penalty kick of the season.
North Carolina would remain with a 3-1 lead until Aleigh Gambone found Hallie Klanke, who chipped the ball over the goalkeeper to give UNC its final lead of the contest with 22 minutes to play.
UNC held a 20-4 shot advantage and put 11 on goal compared to Wake Forest's four.
