Series History
• UNC holds a 18-2-0 all-time series lead against the Hokies with the last Virginia Tech win coming in 2011. VT won the game 1-0 in Blacksburg.
• Since 2011, the Tar Heels hold a 26-5 goal advantage in the 10 meetings.
• In the last meeting between the two programs in 2019, UNC won 2-0. The Tar Heels saw a goal from Zoe Redei and scored a team goal.
Top Storylines
• Rachel Jones was the story from the season-opener. The junior netted a pair of goals and recorded an assist on a goal from Brianna Pinto. The two goals were a career-high for Jones.
• Pinto scored her first goal of the season after she took a pass from Jones, made two defenders miss at the top of the box and fired into the right-side of the net.
• Aleigh Gambone found Hallie Klanke for her first goal of the season in the second half against Wake Forest. After a nice touch after the pass, Klanke chipped the ball over the goalkeeper's head from the right side of the box.
• The Tar Heels have dominated the Hokies over the last six meetings between the two programs. North Carolina holds a 6-0 advantage and a +17 goal differential (17-0) against Virginia Tech in those meetings.
• The University of North Carolina men's and women's soccer teams are joining forces this September to raise money to support the UNC Lineberger pediatric hematology/oncology clinic. The funds raised will be used to help patients and their families with non-medical needs like parking and gas cards.
• The Tar Heels welcome 23 returners from 2019, highlighted by Emily Fox and Brianna Pinto, who were each All-ACC First Team selections last year. Taylor Otto, a Third Team member, will be featured in the midfield in 2020.
• Carolina won its 23rd ACC tournament in 2019 with a 2-1 double overtime victory over Virginia. The Tar Heels captured the regular season ACC championship as well, the 23rd time in program history.
