GREENSBORO, N.C. - Six North Carolina standouts have been placed on the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Football Team, recognizing outstanding academic and athletic performances during the 2020 season. Sophomores Don Chapman, Tomari Fox, Sam Howell, Cam'Ron Kelly, Ben Kiernan and freshman Ja'Qurious Conley were among those recognized on Monday by the league.Â
Howell earns a spot on the academic team for the season year in a row. As an exercise and sports science major, the All-ACC quarterback guided Carolina to an 8-4 overall record and a No. 18 final ranking according to the Associated Press. Howell started all 12 games under center for the Tar Heels and tossed 30 touchdown passes and 3,586 yards.
Chapman and Conley are also exercise and sports science majors that played key roles in the defensive backfield alongside Kelly, a psychology major who finished third on the team with 55 tackles in his first full season in Chapel Hill. Chapman's 48 tackles in 11 games was fourth on the club, while Conley saw action in 10 games of his rookie campaign and made 35 tackles.
Fox produced 46 tackles and ranked third on the squad with four sacks and tied fourth with six TFL from his defensive line position.Â
Kiernan, the punter for the Tar Heels, averaged 43.7 yards on 34 punts in 2020. Nearly half of all punts landed inside the 20-yard line, and eight were booted beyond 50 yards in length.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
