Milestone Hat Trick Leads to Third ACC Honor for Matson
October 12, 2021 | Field Hockey
Following a hat trick that boosted her to a memorable milestone, UNC senior Erin Matson has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week.
Â
The Tar Heel forward scored three times in Friday's home-turf win over Duke to reach the 100-career-goals mark, something only 12 NCAA DI players had previously achieved. Her career goals total is now just one shy of the ACC record of 101, scored by Virginia's Meridith Thorpe from 1995-98.
Â
Matson's hat trick led UNC to a 4-1 win. It was her second-highest scoring output of the season, following four goals in another landmark game, the Sept. 5 matchup with Penn during which she became Carolina's career leader in scoring and goals. Matson has six multi-goal games this fall.
Â
The ACC honor is Matson's third of the season. Duke goalkeeper Grace Brightbill and Syracuse midfielder Laura Graziosi shared Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Â
Next up for No. 10 UNC is an ACC road game on Friday at Wake Forest. Game time at Kentner Stadium is 5 p.m. and the action will be televised by the ACC Network.
