Strong Opening Day For Men's Tennis At Commodore Invitational

NASHVILLE, TENN.—Seven University of North Carolina men's tennis players picked up singles wins and three doubles teams won their matches as the Tar Heel men's tennis team opened action at the Commodore Invitational on Friday.
The Tar Heels played individual players from Lipscomb and the University of Memphis in the first day of a three-day event hosted by Vanderbilt that also includes competitors from Georgia Tech.
Carolina got straight-set singles wins from Peter Murphy, Anuj Watane and Logan Zapp, and Casey Kania earned an 8-6 win in one set in his match. Chris Li, Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger all won their matches in three sets, with Li and Cernoch both dropping the first set before rallying to win the final two. Mark Dillon dropped his match, 7-5, 7-6.
In doubles action, Zapp and Kania, Murphy and Li and Watane and Dillon all won their matches, respectively. Cernoch and Kiger fell, 8-5, in their doubles match.
Full results are below, and the Tar Heels will return to action on Saturday and Sunday in Nashville.
