Garvanian Leads Men's Soccer Over #14 Loyola Marymount, 2-0

CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina took their earliest lead of the regular season since competing against Bucknell in their first game when Milo Garvanian scored on a penalty kick in the sixth minute. Garvanian found the back of the net for a second time only 17 minutes later to lead UNC over Loyola Marymount, 2-0.
North Carolina's win over Loyola Marymount improves their record to 8-5-1 (2-4 ACC), while the Lions' record falls to 9-3-1 (1-1 WCC).
Carolina was unranked in the national polls this week after falling to fellow ACC opponents Wake Forest and Louisville.
North Carolina leads the ACC in shots and continued to outshoot opponents tonight. The Tar Heels' shot comparison improved to 239-70.
Alec Smir recorded two critical saves through 90 minutes to keep Loyola Marymount scoreless. UNC has now tallied 8 shutout wins this season.
"We're just trying to take each game as they come," said Smir. "We haven't won back to back games since September, so we're gonna try to focus on the end of the week."
Garvanian's successful penalty kick in the sixth minute tallied his first goal of the 2021 season.
He proceeded to record his second goal of the season less than 20 minutes later with assists from Yaya Bakayoko and Santiago Herrera.
"We had the penalty that was really well taken, and he's been up there quite a bit," said head coach Carlos Somoano when asked about Garvanian's performance. "I think it's the same philosophy. If you keep sticking to the principles eventually, we'll be able to execute. I'm sure it feels good."
The Tar Heel defense held Loyola Marymount to only four shots throughout the game. Loyola Marymount previously held an average of 15.5 shots per game.
The Tar Heels will be on the road at Virginia Tech for their next game. Their game at Virginia Tech is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 24th at 7 p.m.
