Volleyball Earns 3-1 Victory at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Carolina volleyball earned its second win over Virginia Tech this season, defeating the Hokies 3-1 on the road in Cassell Coliseum. Nia Parker-Robinson led the Tar Heels with 16 kills, her twentieth double-digit kill match of the season.
Mabrey Shaffmaster (12) and Amanda Phegley (11) also contributed double-digit kills, while Meghan Neelon tallied 44 assists. Shaffmaster tied her career-best of 20 digs.
As a team, the Heels hit .172.
Set One - Carolina: 25, Virginia Tech: 13
The Heels came out hot to open the match, outhitting Virginia Tech .323 to .000, led by four kills from each Shaffmaster and Kaya Merkler and two blocks from Skyy Howard.
Set Two – Carolina: 11, Virginia Tech: 25
The roles reserved in set two with the Hokies dominating Carolina, outhitting the Heels .438 to -.027. As a team, Carolina recorded just seven kills, led by two from each Parker-Robinson and Phegley. Merkler and Neelon combined for the sole Tar Heel block of the set.
Set Three – Carolina: 25, Virginia Tech: 23
The Tar Heels rebounded from a lackluster set two in set three, winning a tightly contested set that included 12 ties and six lead changes. Parker-Robinson dominated offensively, tallying a match-best eight kills in the frame, while Shaffmaster contributed the other five Carolina kills. Merkler, Shaffmaster and Ryan Shannon each also had a service ace in the set.
Set Four – Carolina: 25, Virginia Tech: 17
In control of the match, the Tar Heels opened set four with back-to-back kills from Merkler and Parker-Robinson. Carolina tallied 16 kills in the set compared to eight from the Hokies, led by six from Phegley on .667 hitting. The Heels hit a match-best .324, while holding Virginia Tech to .000 for the second set of the match. Shaffmaster sealed the match victory with her twelfth kill.
