Carolina Volleyball Dominates Virginia, 3-0, for 20th Win of the Season

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Led by 14 kills from Mabrey Shaffmaster, the Carolina volleyball team earned a dominant straight-set road victory on Sunday afternoon in Memorial Gymnasium to earn the team's 20th win of the season.
Amanda Phegley hit a team-best .500 with seven kills, while Kaya Merkler added another eight on .400 hitting.
The Tar Heels (20-7, 8-7 ACC) out-hit the Cavaliers .267 to .107, with Virginia committing nine service errors.
"I'm very proud of the team today," head coach Joe Sagula said. "I really liked their focus and energy. We really needed to come out and play our style of volleyball. It was also one of our best serving matches of the year. We had a very balanced attack."
How it Happened (25-17, 25-17, 25-11)
Set One: Carolina – 25, Virginia: 17
After the Cavaliers opened the match with back-to-back points, Carolina went on a 5-0 run to take the lead, a lead they held onto for the rest of the set. Shaffmaster had a team-best five kills in the frame, while Parker-Robinson and Kaya Merkler each had three. As a team, Carolina outhit Virginia .300 to .188, while the Cavaliers also had five service errors.
Set 2: Carolina – 25, Virginia: 17
After a slow start, with Virginia jumping out to a 7-2 lead, the Heels once again took control of the match. Led by four kills from Shaffmaster, Carolina out-hit the Cavaliers .194-.120. Ryan Shannon and Olivia Diaz also each had a service ace. Shaffmaster and Merkler combined for the sole block of the set for the Heels.
Set 3: Carolina: 25, Virginia: 11
Diaz set the tone in set three, opening the set with a service ace. Carolina jumped out to a 3-0 lead after back-to-back kills from Shaffmaster and Phegley, forcing a Virginia timeout. Carolina hit a match-best .320 in the frame, while holding Virginia to -.053. Diaz finished the set with three service aces while Shaffmaster had two. Merkler clinched match point with her eighth kill.
