Men's Soccer Falls To No. 16 New Hampshire In NCAA Second Round
November 21, 2021 | Men's Soccer
DURHAM, N.H. – North Carolina fell to No. 16 New Hampshire, 4-1, on the road in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
North Carolina finishes the season with a record of 11-7-2 (4-4 ACC), while New Hampshire's record improves to 17-1-2 (7-0-1 America East) as they advance to the third round of the tournament. New Hampshire will compete against the winner of No. 1 Oregon State and St. Johns.
Carolina was ranked No. 23 by United Soccer Coaches, No. 22 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll, and No. 24 by the College Soccer News poll this week after falling to Clemson in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championships, but advancing on penalty kicks against Loyola Maryland in the first round.
New Hampshire came out aggressive from the start, recording four shots and a goal before the Tar Heels took their first shot.
After New Hampshire got on the board in the 23rd minute, the Tar Heels were able to respond with a goal of their own less than 60 seconds later.
Tim Schels evened the score, 1-1, in the 24th minute off of a ball from Jonathan Jimenez and Antonio Lopez.
In the remaining 20 minutes of the first half, New Hampshire recorded 3 unanswered goals to go up, 4-1, at halftime.
Both teams came out with urgency in the second half, but neither team was able to find the back of the net through the final 45 minutes.
Goalkeeper Alec Smir recorded three saves, but the Wildcats offense gave them the advantage in today's match-up to end the Tar Heels' season.
UNC was outshot for only the fourth time this season, with New Hampshire tallying 11 shots to North Carolina's 8.
"Overall, I'm proud of the team," said Santiago Herrera. "We always believed. No matter what."
Notes:
• Tega Ikoba leads the team with six goals on the season. Cameron Fisher is close behind with five.
• North Carolina allowed four goals against New Hampshire, tying the most they have allowed all season (Pitt on Sept. 10).
• This was only the second competition between UNC and UNH, bringing their all-time record to 1-1-0.
• UNC finishes the season with a record of 11-7-2 (4-4 ACC),
• Tar Heels in the National Polls: Carolina is ranked No. 23 by United Soccer Coaches poll, No. 22 by the Top Drawer Soccer poll, and No. 24 by College Soccer News this week.
