Five Tar Heels Earn All-ACC Honors
November 4, 2021 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL – Center back Maycee Bell earned first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors for the second straight year, joining four other University of North Carolina women's soccer players to earn all-conference awards this season.
Bell, a junior from Wichita, Kan., anchors a Tar Heel defense that has allowed just 12 goals in 17 games. She also scored twice, including an overtime winner vs. Stanford. Bell injured an ankle in the second-to-last game of the season against Notre Dame, but hopes to return for NCAA Tournament play that begins next weekend.
The Tar Heels are 12-2-3, ranked No. 5 in the nation in the RPI and seventh in the United Soccer Coaches national poll.
Sophomore midfielder Sam Meza (Balch Spring, Texas) earned second-team honors and senior goalkeeper Claudia Dickey (Charlotte, N.C.) was named to the third team.
Meza scored twice this season, including an overtime Golden Goal vs. Arkansas, which is currently in the top five in both the RPI and poll.
Dickey has seven shutouts and is allowing just 0.67 goals per game. She has 52 career victories in net for the Tar Heels.
Emily Colton and Emily Murphy earned spots on the All-Freshman team. Colton (Carlsbad, Calif.) leads the team with seven goals; Murphy (Windsor, England) is the team's leading scorer with 16 points on five goals and six assists, despite missing three games with an ankle injury.
"I am very proud of the exceptional young women that were just honored by the best conference in America," UNC head coach Anson Dorrance said. "Maycee Beall continues to set a standard as one of the best central defenders in America. Claudia Dickey is, in my opinion, one of the most complete goalkeepers we have ever had play for the University of North Carolina in our history.
"Sam Meza is in a "Tobin Heath" class for creativity and is that "I would pay money to watch" kind of player that our game needs to become the spectator sport we all dream of it becoming. Of the freshman that were honored: Emily Colton and Emily Murphy are wonderful attacking players that even senior laden teams have to address in their pre-games."
