BOONE, N.C. - The No. 20 North Carolina wrestling team notched the 17-15 win at Appalachian State on Friday night inside Varsity Gym.

The night started at 125 with Spencer Moore taking on No. 31 Caleb Smith. Smith used two takedowns in the final period to pull away and earn the 7-3 decision. In the 133 bout, it was tight throughout, but Joe Heilmann used an escape to earn the 4-3 upset over No. 23 Codi Russell. No. 9 Kizhan Clarke was in control the whole match en route to a 7-3 decision over Heath Gonyer at 141. Zach Sherman would battle, but it was not enough as No. 7 Jonathan Millner earned the 5-2 decision.

No. 7 Austin O'Connor took care of business and earned the 12-3 major decision. Sonny Santiago lost 5-0 and Clay Lautt 6-5 in back-to-back matches. Gavin Kane earned a clutch 3-1 decision in the 184 bout to give the Tar Heels the lead.

No. 30 Max Shaw downed Mason Fiscella in a 10-1 major decision to extend the Tar Heels lead. Brandon Whitman fell to Michael Burchell in a hard-fought decision to end the night.

North Carolina will be back in action on Jan. 1-2, when it travels to Chattanooga to compete in the Southern Scuffle.
