December 9, 2021 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL – Carolina sophomores Talia Dellaperuta and Avery Patterson along with freshman Emily Colton are among the 24 players called by newly appointed U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team head coach Tracey Kevins to the Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., to participate in a year-end camp this month.
The U-20 USWNT is preparing for next year's Concacaf U-20 Women's Championship which is set for Feb. 25-March 12 in the Dominican Republic. This year's Concacaf U-20 Women's Championship will qualify three teams to the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica. As host, Costa Rica received an automatic bid to the world championship tournament.
Players born on or after Jan. 1, 2002, are age-eligible for the Concacaf U-20 Women's Championship.
Dellaperuta was part of the roster helped the U-20 USWNT win the 2020 Concacaf U-20 Women's Championship. The U-20s took home the title with a dominant performance in the Dominican Republic, rattling off seven straight victories and a 44-1 goal differential. She also helped the U.S. lift the 2018 Concacaf U-17 Women's Championship trophy.
Dellaperuta played in only eight games this past season, missing the entire month of September due to injury. She returned to the lineup Oct. 7 against Pittsburgh and averaged nearly 25 minutes per match over the final seven contests. She scored her lone goal of the year in the regular season finale against Miami.
An ACC all-freshman team performer, Colton played in all 18 games this past season while Patterson saw action in 17 matches, sitting out the NC State game due to injury. Colton led the Tar Heels with seven goals in 2021, while Patterson tied for second with five. The duo ranked second and third, respectively, on the squad in total points with Colton tallying 15 points and Patterson 13.
