Tar Heels Tee It Up at Palmetto Intercollegiate
February 19, 2021 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL – Continuing their spring season, the North Carolina women's golf team travels to College of Charleston's Palmetto Intercollegiate, Monday and Tuesday at Kiawah Island Resort's  6,021-yard, par-72 Turtle Point course in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Â
"Last weekend our first tournament after 11.5 months and I think it showed," head coach Jan Mann said. "We were prepared in so many ways, but it was telling that we hadn't competed in quite a bit of time while most of the other teams had already competed once this spring. Our ball striking was really good, but we gave away shots putting which doesn't surprise me for a first event. With one tournament under our belts, we're hoping for a better outing this weekend to be more relaxed and confident on the course."
Â
The Tar Heels starting five includes sophomores Kayla Smith and Krista Junkkari, and freshmen Nicole Adam, Natalia Aseguinolaza and Crista Izuzquiza. Junior Jennifer Zhou will compete as an individual. Fans can follow live results on GolfStat.com.
Â
"I haven't been to Turtle Point in a while, but I think it's a typical Kiawah Resort course," Mann said. "It's a bit of a placement course, but with our ball-striking and improved putting, I think we'll be in a good situation this weekend."
Â
Carolina is one of 11 teams competing at Turtle Point, including ACC opponents, Clemson, Duke, NC State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. The first and second rounds will be played Sunday as teams tee off from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on the first and 10th holes. Teams will tee off Monday between 8-9:30 a.m. on the first and 10th holes.
Â
"A lot of us (ACC teams) added the event because we weren't able to compete in the fall and wanted an extra tournament this spring. With it being 36-18, it'll be good preparation as we move forward this season toward ACCs."
The Tar Heels return to action at South Carolina's Gamecock Intercollegiate Mar. 1-3 in Columbia, S.C.
