February 21, 2021 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – The UNC men's lacrosse team earned its first road win of the season and improved to 4-0 overall with a 14-9 win at No. 16 Richmond Sunday. The second-ranked Tar Heels got goals from 10 different players in the victory at Robins Stadium.
For the third time in UNC's four games, the opponent scored first, this time a goal from the Spiders' Dalton Young 92 seconds into the action. The Tar Heels tied it up just over a minute later on senior Chris Gray's only goal of the day and the score stayed knotted for almost seven minutes. After that slow start, both teams saw a burst of scoring, with two Richmond goals and three by UNC in the span of just over two minutes. When the dust cleared, the Tar Heels had pulled ahead 4-3 on a goal by senior Justin Anderson, assisted by Gray, and the visitors never trailed again.
After exchanging goals to open the second quarter, the Tar Heels strung together three in a row – by Brian Cameron, Will Nicklaus and Ryan O'Connell – to take an 8-4 lead into halftime.
The Spiders scored three straight goals in the middle of the third quarter to pull within two at 9-7, but Anderson scored for the Tar Heels to break up the Richmond run. William Perry assisted on Anderson's goal then scored back-to-back goals of his own to give UNC a five-goal cushion at 12-7 and Carolina held on for the win.
Cameron finished with a hat trick and joined Perry and Anderson in contributing three points on the day.
UNC led 46-33 in shots. Richmond goalkeeper Jack Rusbuldt made 19 saves, the second-highest single-game total in school history. For the Tar Heels, freshman Collin Krieg had nine saves in earning his fourth win of the year.
UNC had another stellar day at the face-off x, winning 18 of 26 on the day and all six in the second quarter. The Tar Heels took 13 of 14 in the second half. For the game junior Zac Tucci was 11-13 and sophomore Andrew Tyeryar was 7-13.
UNC led Richmond 30-24 in ground balls, with Tar Heel sophomore Matt Wright collecting a team-best seven.
The Tar Heels return to action on Saturday, hosting High Point in the teams' second match-up in 11 days.
