CHAPEL HILL – The Tar Heels (6-0) took the game two of the weekend, 2-1, to clinch the series against No. 2/12 Virginia (3-3) on an overcast Saturday afternoon on Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium.
The Tar Heels broke through in the bottom of the second inning when Justice Thompson hit a double down the left field line then later scored on an RBI single from Johnny Castagnozzi.
During Castagnozzi's at bat in the bottom of the fourth, Thompson bolted down the third-base line to steal home and extend Carolina's lead to 2-0. This marked the first time a Tar Heel has stolen home since Logan Warmoth did so against UNCA on May 10, 2017.
Virginia scored the team's first run of the game on an RBI single to the left-field gap between making the score 2-1 to end the top of the fifth.
Max Carlson, in his second appearance as a Tar Heel, pitched 5.1 innings and recorded five strikeouts. Carlson only allowed four hits and one run and captured his second win in as many starts.
Nik Pry was dominant for the Tar Heels on Saturday, as he pitched the final 3.2 innings for the Heels, allowing just one hit and no runs. Both his innings pitched (3.2) and his six punchouts were career highs.
He picked up his second save of 2021.
North Carolina returns to Boshamer Stadium for the final game of the series against Virginia tomorrow at 2 p.m.
