Bailey Named Candidate for Senior CLASS Award
February 8, 2021 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina senior center Janelle Bailey has been selected as one of 30 candidates for the women's basketball 2020-21 Senior CLASS Award. To be considered for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
A communication studies major from Charlotte, N.C., Bailey leads the Tar Heels this season in scoring (13.9 ppg) and rebounding (8.1 rpg). She was recently announced as one of 10 finalists for the Lisa Leslie Award, which goes to the nation's top center. It's the third year in a row that Bailey, a preseason All-ACC pick, has been in the top 10.
The Senior CLASS Award candidates – 30 men and 30 women – will be narrowed to two fields of 10 finalists in late February, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will then select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2021 NCAA Men's Final Four® and NCAA Women's Final Four® this spring.
Bailey is one of two Atlantic Coast Conference players, along with Louisville's Dana Evans, on the women's list. She's one of two Tar Heels honored overall, joining Carolina's Garrison Brooks, who is one of three ACC players on the men's list.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
