Men's Soccer Blanks Virginia, 2-0

CHAPEL HILL—North Carolina scored twice in a span of under three minutes in the first half and picked up a 2-0 men's soccer win over Virginia on Saturday night at Dorrance Field.
The Tar Heels improved to 5-3-2 this season, including 5-1-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia dropped to 5-5-1, 3-4-1.
After a scoreless opening 30 minutes of the game, the Tar Heels scored twice in a flurry. First, Giovanni Montesdeoca connected on a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead after Cavalier defender Irakoze Donasiyano took Montesdeoca down inside the box.
Two-and-a-half minutes later, Montesdeoca assisted Riley Thomas for a 2-0 lead, passing into the box from the right side for a goal in the lower right corner of the net.
Carolina outshot the Cavaliers, 9-6,
Alec Smir played all 90 minutes in goal for the Tar Heels and made four saves in posting his seventh shutout of the season and the 16th of his career. Alex Rando went the distance in the goal for Virginia, making five saves.
Carolina will return to action on Saturday March 20 at Syracuse.
