CHAPEL HILL—North Carolina scored twice in a span of under three minutes in the first half and picked up a 2-0 men's soccer win over Virginia on Saturday night at Dorrance Field.

The Tar Heels improved to 5-3-2 this season, including 5-1-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia dropped to 5-5-1, 3-4-1.

After a scoreless opening 30 minutes of the game, the Tar Heels scored twice in a flurry. First, Giovanni Montesdeoca connected on a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead after Cavalier defender Irakoze Donasiyano took Montesdeoca down inside the box.

Two-and-a-half minutes later, Montesdeoca assisted Riley Thomas for a 2-0 lead, passing into the box from the right side for a goal in the lower right corner of the net.

Carolina outshot the Cavaliers, 9-6,

Alec Smir played all 90 minutes in goal for the Tar Heels and made four saves in posting his seventh shutout of the season and the 16^th of his career. Alex Rando went the distance in the goal for Virginia, making five saves.

Carolina will return to action on Saturday March 20 at Syracuse.
