Women's Lacrosse Wins 15th In A Row, 19-7, At Louisville

LOUISVILLE, KY. — The No. 1-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team cruised to its 15th consecutive win on Thursday night, running to a 19-7 win at No. 19 Louisville behind a season-high seven goals from Jamie Ortega.
Carolina improved to 8-0 this season and 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cardinals fell to 4-3, 0-2. Carolina is 7-0 all-time against UofL.
Ortega finished the game with seven goals on seven shots, one off her career high of eight goals in the 2019 ACC Tournament versus Virginia Tech. She posted her 52 career multi-goal game, including her 21st with five or more goals.
Carolina out-shot the Cards, 33-27, and connected on 19 of those attempts. Six different Tar Heels scored multiple goals. UNC had an 18-10 edge in draw controls and a 13-7 advantage in ground balls.
Scottie Rose Growney added three goals and two assists for UNC, while Kerrigan Miller had two goals and an assist and Katie Hoeg had one goal and two assists. Ally Mastroianni, Tayler Warehime and Caitlyn Wurzburger scored twice apiece.
After the game was tied, 1-1 in the opening few minutes, the Tar Heels ripped off a 7-0 run to take an 8-1 lead on Ortega's fourth goal with 12:56 to go before halftime. UNC led, 10-4, at the break.
The Tar Heels then took a 10-goal lead to create a running clock situation on a goal by Mastroianni with 14:16 to play. UNC outscored the Cards, 9-3, in the second half.
Taylor Moreno started in goal and picked up the win, making 11 saves and allowing seven goals on 27 shots faced to improve her 2021 record to 8-0.
Carolina will return to action at home on Sunday against James Madison.

• Carolina won its 15th consecutive game. Its last loss came on May 24, 2019, in an NCAA Tournament semifinal to Boston College. The longest winning streak in school history is 20 games.
• UNC scored double-figure goals for the 24th game in a row and held its opponent to single digits for the eighth game in a row (every game in 2021).
