Hoeg Leads Tar Heels Past JMU, 15-5

CHAPEL HILL—The No. 1-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team got a career day from Katie Hoeg and beat No. 24 James Madison, 15-5, on Sunday afternoon at Dorrance Field.
Hoeg tied her career high with five goals and added four assists for a career-high-tying nine points. She set her previous goal high of five versus Louisville in 2018 and her previous scoring high was nine versus JMU in 2019.
Jamie Ortega scored four goals and added two assists for Carolina, running her consecutive goals streak to 23 games and her consecutive scoring streak to 53. Scottie Rose Growney tallied three goals and three assists. Ally Mastroianni, Kerrigan Miller and Tayler Warehime each scored one goal.
Isabella Peterson and Kacey Knobloch each scored twice for the Dukes, with Peterson adding a team-high two assists.
The Tar Heels overcame a strong game in goal by JMU's Molly Dougherty, who made 13 saves, including nine in the second half.
Taylor Moreno started in goal and played all 60 minutes for the Tar Heels, making eight saves and allowing just five goals to improve her 2021 record to 9-0 and her career record to 37-5.
Carolina will return to action with a home game against Mercer on Saturday March 27.
Notes:
• Carolina won its 16th consecutive game. The longest winning streak in school history is 20 games.
• UNC scored double-figure goals for the 25th game in a row and held its opponent to single digits for the ninth game in a row (every game in 2021).
• Carolina is 9-0 this season with eight wins over opponents ranked in the IWLCA top 25.
• Jamie Ortega extended her goals streak to 23 consecutive games and posted her 53rd career multi-goal game (53 multi-goal games in 58 career games).
• Ortega has tallied at least one point in 52 consecutive games and 57 of 58 in her career.
