Tar Heels Tee It Up at NC State’s Big Four Duel
March 19, 2021 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL – Competing in its first match play event of the season, the North Carolina women's golf continues its spring slate at NC State's Big Four Duel on Saturday at the 6,351-yard, par 72 Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C.
"This weekend is an opportunity for our team to not only prepare for NCAAs, but also for ACCs with the match-play format of the Big Four," head coach Jan Mann said.
Competing in match play is freshman Nicole Adam, freshman Crista Izuzquiza, sophomore Krista Junkkari, freshman Natalia Aseguinolaza and junior Jennifer Zhou. Junior Nicole Lu and senior Ava Bergner will compete in stroke play.
"Match play is interesting because you want to play your own game," Mann said. "The beauty of match play is that you can have a bad hole and lose the hole, but you don't have to make up ground the same as you would in stroke play. That will be good for our young team that they can move on and focus on each hole. The strategy is a bit different, but most of our team is familiar with match play on the European circuit. I think it'll be great for us."
The field includes ACC opponents, Duke, Wake Forest and host NC State. The Tar Heels will be paired with Wake Forest at 9 a.m. The final and consolation matches will begin at approximately 1:30 p.m.
"The format will be different, but we see Wake Forest, Duke and NC State often throughout the year," Mann said. "We've played Lonnie Pool a few times so the team is familiar with the course. The weather doesn't look good, but we've been in the wind the entire spring so we'll embrace that."
Most recently, North Carolina wrapped up the Briar's Creek Invitational with its best round of the tournament to place eighth in the two-day, 54-hole event. Sophomore Junkkari led the way with a top-15 finish.
Up next, Carolina travels to Charlottesville, Virginia for Cavalier Match Play April 6-7.
