Dellaperuta Leads Offensive Explosion In 5-0 Win Over Delaware
March 20, 2021 | Women's Soccer
NEWARK, Del.- It had been 125 days since the Tar Heels took the pitch for a regular-season matchup but No. 2 North Carolina (12-1-0) showed no signs of rust in a 5-0 win over Delaware (2-2-0) on Saturday.
After leading 1-0 at the break, the North Carolina offense exploded for four second-half goals for its first win of the spring slate.
Freshman Talia Dellaperuta led the Tar Heels on the offensive end and recorded her first-career brace with a goal each half.
After four North Carolina shots in the first 20 minutes, Dellaperuta gave the Tar Heels a 1-0 advantage in the 27th minute of the contest. The freshman netted her third goal of the season when she fired a shot across the box after weaving her way through the right side of the Blue Hen defense.
At the half, Carolina held an 11-3 advantage in shots and put six shots on the Delaware goal. Claudia Dickey recorded a pair of first half saves, while freshman Ruby Grant registered her first shot in Carolina Blue.
Abby Allen put the Tar Heels up 2-0 in the 48th minute with her first-career goal. After the soccer ball pinballed around the Delaware box, the freshman recorded UNC's second goal of the afternoon.
The Tar Heels pushed quickly to find a third goal immediately after Allen's score and put three shots on goal in the three minutes. Aleigh Gambone recorded the first while Dellaperuta and Pinto followed with shots of their own.
Pinto extended the Tar Heels' lead with her seventh goal of the season in the 75th minute after collecting the ball from Hallie Klanke. Dellaperuta followed just three minutes later with her second goal of the match which was assisted by Gambone.
Alexis Strickland put away her first goal of the season in the 87th minute to give the Tar Heels the final five-goal advantage.
UNC dominated the match and ended with a 30-3 shot advantage, including 20 on goal. It was the first time that the Tar Heels recorded 30 shots since October 21, 2018 against Miami when UNC registered 36.
Carolina continues its spring slate March 27 at Tennessee.
