Three Tar Heels are among the 52 Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes selected as 2021 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship Award recipients. Chris Gray (men's lacrosse), Rachel Jones (women's soccer) and Ally Mastroianni (women's lacrosse) were part of the list of conference honorees announced on Wednesday.
"We are incredibly proud of the accomplishments of our ACC postgraduate scholarship recipients," ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said. "These student-athletes have enjoyed outstanding undergraduate careers and are to be congratulated for their continued pursuit of academic excellence. There is a bright future ahead for this group, and they will undoubtedly remain leaders and difference makers in our society."
Â
Gray, from Wading River, N.Y., is a management and society major and plans to go on to UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School to earn his MBA. He leads the 8-0 UNC men's lacrosse team in goals (30) and assists (23) this season.
Â
Jones, from Lawrenceville, Ga., is a starting forward for the UNC women's soccer team. She ranks second on the team in goals (5) and is the team leader in assists (4) for the Tar Heels, 12-1 one game into their spring slate. A public policy major, she serves as president of UNC's Student-Athlete Advisory Council and plans to go on to law school after graduation.
Â
Mastroianni, from Martinsville, N.J., is a midfielder for the 9-0 UNC women's lacrosse team. She has started every game this season and has 16 goals (fifth on the team) and two assists. She is earning a double major in media & journalism and communication studies and plans to pursue a master's degree in the field after graduation.
The Weaver-James-Corrigan postgraduate scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Each recipient will receive $6,000 toward his or her graduate education. Those honored have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
Â
This year's class of postgraduate scholarship recipients will be highlighted in a one-hour show on ACC Network that will debut in May.
