Tar Heels Take on UCF Saturday
March 26, 2021 | Women's Rowing
CHAPEL HILL Â -- Continuing the season in Charlottesville, Virginia, Carolina rowing returns to the race course Saturday to take on UCF at the South Fork Rivanna River Reservoir hosted by Virginia.
Â
"Since the Carolina Cup, we've been continuing to build fitness and work on our intensity while varying the volume for race week," interim co-head coach Thomas Revelle said. "We've been refining each element of the race to execute each 500 according to our race plan. Every time we race, of course we want our bow to cross the line first, but we also know that this is a piece of the puzzle to build toward championship regattas. If each boat comes off the course feeling that they executed the plan to the best of their abilities and has nothing left in the tank when they cross the finish line, then we can build off that effort and execution regardless of the finish order to focus on championships in May."
Â
With only two lanes of racing, the teams at the South Fork Rivanna River Reservoir will alternate every other race down the course. Carolina's 3V8 begins the regatta at noon with the 2V4 starting at 12:20 p.m. and the 1V4 at 12:40 p.m. The 2V8 will take off at 1 p.m. and the 1V8 will close out the day at 1:20 p.m. Duke, Tennessee and host Virginia will be racing in the alternating times.
Â
"Although the travel is not ideal, it gives us the opportunity to race," interim co-head coach Emilie Gross said. "We're really grateful that UVA asked us to join this weekend and accommodate the travel by not racing in the afternoon. That was something that we're very grateful for."
Â
Freshmen Claire Melgard and Isabelle McGimsey will be making their collegiate debuts in Charlottesville, while Molly Hilemn, Caroline Lammersen, Becca Lewis, Gigi Maroney and Lauren Walsh saw their first collegiate action at Clemson.
Â
Up next, the Tar Heels return to Clemson, S.C. to face Oklahoma and host, Clemson on April 17.
