Schels' OT Goal Lifts Men's Soccer Past Notre Dame, 2-1

NOTRE DAME, IND.—Tim Schels scored in the seventh minute of overtime to lift No. 16 North Carolina to a 2-1 victory in the rain at Notre Dame on Saturday night. Carolina came from behind to win after trailing, 1-0, at halftime.
Midway through the overtime period, Schels stole the ball from an Irish player near midfield. Key White, who had just entered the game as a substitute, gathered the ball and passed it back to Schels as he slipped past the Irish back line and scored.
The Fighting Irish took an early lead in the 20th minute of the game on a goal by Reese Mayer off an assist from Dawson McCartney. Santiago Herrera tied the score at the 62:15 with an unassisted goal.
UNC out-shot Notre Dame, 15-9, and had 11 corner kicks to the Irish's five.
Carolina improved to 6-3-3 in the 2020-21 season, including 6-1-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. UNC is 3-0-1 in its last four games with wins over No. 4 Pittsburgh, No. 24 Virginia and Notre Dame, as well as a tie at Syracuse.
The Tar Heels will return to action next Friday, April 2, for senior night against Virginia Tech at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill.
