CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.—Sixth-ranked Virginia handed top-ranked North Carolina its first defeat of the 2021 season, 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Boars Head Sports Club.

With the defeat, the Tar Heels fell to 13-1 this season, 5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina saw its 15-match winning streak come to an end.

The Cavaliers evened the season score with the Tar Heels, who beat Virginia, 4-2, on February 13 in the semifinals of the ITA Indoor Team National Championship in Champaign, Ill.

Virginia began the afternoon by taking the doubles point behind wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.

The Cavaliers then picked up wins in the first four singles matches to clinch the team victory and build a 5-0 lead.

Mac Kiger won Carolina's only match of the day in three sets at No. 6 singles.

The Tar Heels will return to action with a pair of home matches next weekend. Carolina will host Boston College on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Duke on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
