April 10, 2021 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – Getting back in the win column thanks to home runs by Dominique Monteon and Brittany Pickett, North Carolina evened the series against Virginia with a 7-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Stadium.

Scoring in the first three innings, Carolina jumped to a four-run lead off four Tar Heel bats before UVA responded with a run in the sixth. Pickett's fifth home run of the season extended the Tar Heels' lead to six. Despite a seventh-inning home run by the Cavaliers, North Carolina prevailed for the 7-3 win.

Kiannah Pierce and Monteon both had two-hit days while also scored a pair of runs. Katie Grace Olinger went the distance for the third career win and complete game to improve to 1-3 on the season. Virginia's Aly Rayle took the loss in 2.2 innings to sit at 2-4 on the season. Aly Weaver highlighted UVA's offense with a two-run home run in the seventh.

The series between North Carolina (11-14, 7-8 ACC) and Virginia (12-20, 8-15 ACC) wraps up with a doubleheader Sunday at noon.

How it happened:

» Despite a leadoff walk, Olinger froze up her next batter for a looking strikeout to keep the Cavaliers off the board.
» After four scoreless frames, Virginia jumped on the board by scoring an unearned run on Emma McBride's single to left.
» Carolina responded with three runs on four hits in the sixth. Monteon singled for her second hit of the day before Taylor Puetz logged her first career double to plate the first run. Pickett crushed her fourth gone-ball of the season for the 7-1 lead.
