Carolina Falls in Series Finale at Pitt
April 18, 2021 | Softball
Carolina struck early, opening their scoring with Kayla Baptista, who stole two bases before crossing home plate in the third. The Tar Heels also scored two in the fifth, and extended their lead from a Kristina Burkhardt three-run home run in the top of the sixth. Katie Grace Olinger started the game with three out of four 1-2-3 innings, without a single walk on the day.
The Pitt Panthers opened their scoring with two-run homer from Sarah Seamans in the bottom of the fourth, then rallied in the bottom of the sixth scoring nine, including two more home runs, sealing their sweep of the series.
"This was a tough weekend for our team," said head coach Donna J. Papa. "The team played solid defense, hit well in each game, scored runs and gave us a chance to win every game. We battled every inning and the outcomes don't reflect the fight and competitveness that our team showed in each game. I am proud that our team fought hard, and continues to fight for this season."
Carolina slips to 12-19 overall record, 8-13 in ACC play, while Pittsburgh improves to 14-25 with a 9-20 record in league play.
The Tar Heels return to action in Durham, N.C. versus the Duke Blue Devils for a four game series starting on April 23 at 5 p.m.
