April 20, 2021 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina (18-16) fell to Coastal Carolina, 6-3, on Tuesday evening on Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium.
Coastal Carolina started the game off with three home runs, one in the first inning and two in the second. The Chanticleers took an early 3-0 lead.
The Tar Heels were quiet in the first two innings. Wilkerson attempted to spark the Heels' offense with a single in the bottom of the second, but was left stranded.
After a scoreless third inning for both sides, Coastal Carolina had a powerful top of the fourth. The Chanticleers capitalized on a walk and error by the Heels, and hit a two-RBI triple down the right field line to give Coastal a 6-0 lead.
The Tar Heels broke through in the bottom of the fourth with Dallas Tessar's home run, making the score 6-1.
After an eventful fourth inning, the action stalled until the bottom of the seventh. Brett Centracchio hit a single to right field, allowing Tyler Causey to score in an attempt to close in on the lead. The Heels still trailed 6-2 after the seventh.
The Heels did not go down without a fight. Clemente Inclan, Tyler Causey and Caleb Roberts hit consecutive singles in the bottom of the ninth. Roberts' hit allowed Inclan to score, shrinking the deficit to 6-3. However, it was not enough to catch the Chanticleers.
