Freshman Earns Postseason Selection
University of North Carolina freshman Nicole Adam received an invitation to play in the 2021 NCAA Women's Golf Regional in Columbus, Ohio, at the home course of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Â
UNC's team did not receive a bid to the regionals, the first time since 2005 the Tar Heels will not be playing as a team in the NCAA Tournament.
Â
"I'm very disappointed for the team, but I'm also excited for Nicole to get an invitation to play in a regional," says head coach Jan Mann. "This has been such a tough year with Covid. I feel bad for the players given all the work they have put in despite the unusual and trying conditions.
Â
"Nicole has been a great addition to our team. She works extremely hard at her game, so I am glad to see that work pay off. She's originally from Ohio, so this is a homecoming for her and will give her a great experience to build off for next season."
Â
Adam is second on the team in stroke average at 75.07, but posted UNC's lowest rounds of the season, a 69 at the Gamecock Intercollegiate and 69 at the Briar's Creek Invitational. The Pinehurst, N.C., resident leads UNC in birdies (39) and eagles (2) and had two top-25 finishes. She tied for sixth at the Gamecock Intercollegiate.
Â
The Columbus Regional is one of four NCAA regional sites that will host competition May 10-12. Six teams and three individuals (not on those six teams) in each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship round May 21-26 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Â
Mann announced her retirement from collegiate coaching last week. She is in her 12th season leading the Tar Heels and 25th as a college head coach.
