GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) –North Carolina senior Bryn Boylan has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Co-Offensive Player of the Week, becoming the first field hockey player this season to earn both the offensive and defensive weekly honors.
Boylan, who scored the gamewinner in UNC's 4-3 double overtime win over Duke on Friday, was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week following the first game of the fall, a 3-1 win at Wake Forest on Sept. 20, 2020. She went on to garner National Defensive Player of the Week honors as well.
She's the first player since fellow Tar Heel Ashley Hoffman in 2018 to earn both offensive and defensive honors in a season.
With 2:58 remaining in the second overtime of Friday's Senior Day game, the midfielder/forward from Doylestown, Pa., was fouled in the circle then stepped up to take the penalty stroke. She sent a rocket into the lower left corner of the cage for the win. It was Boylan's second game-winning penalty stroke of the season, as she also converted to beat Syracuse 4-3 in overtime in the 2020 ACC Championship semifinals last Nov. 6. She has four goals this season and is 2-for-2 on penalty strokes.
Boylan shares the offensive award with Louisville's Mercedes Pastor, who also had a gamewinning goal in overtime last week. Virginia's Amber Ezechiels was named Defensive Player of the Week.
