GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina swept Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey honors following the opening weekend of the 2020 fall season as Meredith Sholder was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week and Bryn Boylan was recognized as the Defensive Player of the Week.
The ACC announced its honors on Tuesday, with both players recognized for the first time in their careers. On Wednesday, each got another recognition with the NFHCA (National Field Hockey Coaches Association) announcing Sholder and Boylan as its Play Safe/NFHCA Division I National Players of the Week.
The Tar Heels (1-0) opened the season Sunday with a 3-1 win at Wake Forest. It was the first ACC game of the season and the only collegiate field hockey game played thus far in 2020.
In her first game back after missing all of 2019 due to an injury, Sholder started on the front line and scored UNC's only goal from the field in a 3-1 win at Wake Forest on Sunday. With two penalty corner goals in the second quarter, UNC carried a 2-1 lead into the third period. In the 38th minute, Sholder received a pass in the middle of the circle, got around one defender and then shot the ball past the diving Wake keeper to give the Tar Heels a bit of second-half breathing room. The redshirt junior from Alburtis, Pa., finished with two shots on the day as UNC outshot Wake Forest 18-7.
Boylan, a senior, came off the bench to provide a defensive spark in the win, in which the Tar Heels allowed just one corner and limited the Demon Deacons to seven shots. The Doylestown, Pa., native read the game well, intercepted the ball aggressively and maintained intensity. She demonstrated excellent footwork throughout and made key tackles at critical times. Once she made a tackle and secured possession, her outlet pass was precise to start the Tar Heel attack.
UNC has this weekend off and returns to action the following weekend with a pair of ACC games, at Louisville on Oct. 2 and at Duke on Oct. 4.
